Set and display half-star ratings in iTunes 6.0.2 Apps
iTunes 6.0.2 will now display half-star ratings -- that is, songs with a rating of 10 will display ½, and a rating of 30 will display *½, and so on, as seen at right. Note however, that this is broken, in the sense that a song with a rating of 31 will show up as a one-star song, not a 1.5 stars song.

To rate a song as a half-starred value, you can use a simple AppleScript as seen below, or one of the many available rating systems out there. Or here's a one-line AppleScript to set the rating for the currently-playing song to 1.5 stars:
tell application "itunes" to set rating of current track to 30
Modify as needed for the other values.

[robg adds: One such rating system is Add-Subtract A Half Star from Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes.]

(Thanks for the mench, Rob.)

Also, I've posted four separate scripts that increase or decrease the rating star for the selection or the current track on this page. Each works great when assigned a hotkey.

Only problem I encountered is when I view the options on a song the rating changes back to 4 stars from 4 1/2 stars.

Not if you press cancel instead of OK. Of course, this implies that you can not change anything under options without losing the half-star. I hope this feature gets additional implementation soon!

And I was just wondering the other day when we'd finally get the equivalent of 10-star ratings Now if we could only access this capability from the iPod interface!! C'mon Apple, you can do it

I'd doubt it - not without a firmware upgrade, anyway.

And, as someone mentioned above, the ability to set half-star ratings on an iPod would be good, too.

It appears not, from my test, to work on iPods.

No, it won't display half star ratings on an iPod, I just tested it on my nano. I love using it in iTunes, though. I even went through and wrote a interesting applescript to work with Spark and Growl to rate things on the fly. If you are in iTunes, it acts as Doug's AppleScripts script, but if you are in any other application it will add or subtract a half a star to the current playing track only, and will show the song's updated rating with growl. If you would like to see the script, I saved it as HTML on my web site, here.

Half-star ratings have no effect.

At this point in time, (I'm still under 6.0.2, until my download finishes!) ratings such as 1.5 stars have no effect on the relative play counts - with the exception of 0.5 stars.

I wrote something about this for OmniNerd a bit over a week ago: Extended iTunes Rating
