Add a proper set of Canadian holidays to iCal Apps
I was trying to add Canadian holidays to my iCal, but all I found was the Apple version, which was missing Easter, St-Jean-Baptiste, and had the wrong Family Day, and a very old hint which didn't work anymore.

So I started with Apple's version, added the missing Holidays, fixed Family day, and published it myself. Feel free to comment about errors or omissions. I'll update this calendar directly, so everyone subscribed will get the updates.

Note: Valid until 2010.

Interesting. I have the Canadian holidays in my iCal (even though I'm in the US - I love being able to confuse coworkers by greeting them properly on all kinds of foreign holidays) and was not aware of the mistakes and omissions. I'll make sure to subscribe to your version when I get home. Thanks!

What happened to the Queen Mothers' birthday - the May 24th weekend is the first LONG weekend of the summer.

Also the Civic Holiday (called various names depending on where you live) in August. Another long welcome holiday weekend...

In Québec, Queen Mothers' birthday is called «Â Fête des Patriotes », previously named (and stilled called like that by most people) «Â Fête de Dollard ». England's monarchy was never very popular around here ;-)

It's not the Queen Mother's Day, it's Victoria Day, in honour of Queen Victoria's birthday on May 24. Get it right, eh? And don't forget Tim Hortons Day!

Both have been added:
- Victoria Day (Journée Nationale des Patriotes in Québec) - 1st monday before may 25
- August Civic Holiday (all except Québec, Newfoundland & Yukon) - 1st monday of august

Thanks for the pointers.

Is there any way to display these and just the US holidays that don't overlap? I want to know what my US friends are doing MLK day, but don't need "New Years," "New Years," filling the calendar.

In case there is ever any doubt, this is definitely what I'd call the official list: http://www.pch.gc.ca/progs/cpsc-ccsp/jfa-ha/index_e.cfm

The Apple Calendar also has incorrect information about the province of Alberta's Family Day holiday in February.

how about adding some descriptions?

It might be nice to have some comments and/or URLs linking to info about the holidays.

For example, having info about how the date is calculated would be good: For Victoria Day you could have "Celebrated on the Monday before May 25" or something similar, and a URL of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_Day

I don't know what the problem is, but various accents show up screwy in my copy. For example, Québec with the e-accent-ague shows up as Québec, with the e-accent-ague showing up as a capitol-A-with-tilde and a circled-c-copyright symbol.

I think I have the standard fonts, formats, languages, etc. installed and selected...

The Apple published calendar for New Zealand holidays used to have a number of errors.

I filed a bug report and after a bit of time and to-and-froing, Apple's fixed it.

Mother's and Father's day?

They seem to be missing - they may not be "take the day off" holidays, but they can be pretty important from a "don't-forget-them" point of view.
