Edit multiple photos at the same time in iPhoto 6 Apps
Not sure if this could be done in iPhoto 5 or not, but I was sorting my library in iPhoto 6 and I had two images selected. I clicked Edit and both images opened in the Edit mode, side-by-side. It's exactly the same behaviour as you get with the Compare feature in fullscreen mode, but without switching to fullscreen. You can also add and remove photos to your selection in the same way you would in fullscreen mode (Command-clicking in the slide bar at the top of the screen).

[robg adds: I also accidentally discovered this behavior when I Command-clicked one photo while editing another. I assumed then that this was a documented feature of the program, so I let it pass. However, in reading the manual today, it doesn't appear that it's documented at all. The manual goes so far as to state (my emphasis added) "If your library, an album, or an individual photo is selected in organize view, you can click the Edit button to switch to edit view." It does talk about Compare mode, but nothing about editing multiple images at once.]

It would seem that, although it shows more than one photo - you can still only 'edit' the one that is highlighted. You can't, as far as I can tell, apply effects or change levels, etc., to more than one photo at once?

I have to agree. There is no way to batch edit photos in iPhoto. This would be a really great feature. But it still hasn't happened. They need to take a play from picasa here.
I did discover today that when you have a photo selected in edit mode. You can command click on the photo to immediately select the white point which also brings up the adjust panel. I have look through the keyboard short cuts and this doesn't seem to be listed.
Something that is listed but should also be noted is when more than one photo is up in edit mode the hight lighted image can be indexed through with the arrow keys. This is great when trying to compare many shots that are all essentially the same.
Another gem is the ESC key immediately exists from editing mode and clears all un saved edits.

Never mind the editing photos. I cannot get iPhoto to edit the comment field of more than one photo at a time.

Select the photos, go to the "photos" menu and select batch change. or just "command shift B" Select Comments from the first pull down menu.

Hope this helps.

Take a look at iPhoto Batch Enhancer:

I'm evaluating it, no experience yet.
