Create chapter markers for iDVD without iMovie Apps
When Apple released the previous generation of iDVD (version 5; version 6 is out now), Apple stopped claiming that it would import chapter markers from QuickTime movies. But if you send a movie to iDVD from iMovie with chapter markers, and you open that movie in QuickTime, the chapters work. And if you import that movie directly to iDVD, the chapters still work. I was annoyed by this, because I had a 90-minute movie with chapters that wouldn't import into iMovie, and that wouldn't build chapters in iDVD, so I started digging.

I finally found the secret: a bit of user data buried in the chapter track of the movie. If you really want the details on how to fix this issue by hand (it's quite complex), I wrote about it on my site. But I also reported my findings to the creator of the free Metadata Hootenanny which is, among other things, the easiest way to add chapter markers to a QuickTime movie. Within hours, he had updated the program to generate the magic atoms that make the chapter markers work in iDVD 5.

The new iDVD-friendly chapter functionality is available now in the pre-release unstable beta version (1.1.5, 1.5MB download) of Metadata Hootenanny. This isn't an official release version, so the above download link may not work at some point in the future. Check the Metadata Hootenanny page or my site for an updated URL if that's the case.

You can also use SimpleMovieX.

This little application has a chapters pane that easily create chapters (not the QuickTime Pro thing). Once saved, the movie file can be imported into iDVD and the chapters are here!

Regards, BJ

Another program that also works to create chapters that work in iDVD is AVT ChapterIt ( It is not free and has some rough edges at this time (July 2012) but it does work.
