Run some iLife '06 apps on a G3 Apps
It's easy to get iPhoto 6 and iWeb installed on your G3 by copying the iLife installation package to your desktop, control-clicking on the package installer, picking Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu, and then removing this code from the Distribution.dist file using TextEdit:
// Rule out insufficient hardware
if ( !hasAcceptableHardware() )
{
    my.result.title = system.localizedString('TITLE_INCOMPATHW');
    my.result.message = system.localizedString('ERROR_INCOMPATHW');
    my.result.type = 'Fatal';
    return false;
}
iPhoto 6 works great on my fast G3 (1GHz) upgraded Mac (though there are no advanced editing features). iWeb works as well, and it does have the advanced image editing features enabled, but they're very slow.

However, Garageband 3 and iMovie 6 refuse to launch. They bounce in the dock a couple times and then stop bouncing. iDVD gives the same "cannot find required hardware" message as it did in prior releases. See my similar post on Hardmac for more discussion on the non-functional apps. Hopefully someone will find a solution...

Run some iLife '06 apps on a G3

I wanted iPhoto6 on my iBook G3 so I could keep my iPhoto libraries synched between my desktop G4 and my iBook. Following advice I'd seen on another site, I installed iLife on my G4, started up the iBook in Target Disk Mode, and dragged the new iPhoto to the laptop replacing the old iPhoto. Seems to work just fine. Haven't tried any editing yet.

I successfully installed with Pacifist on a G3, and iPhoto worked fine on first attempt (apart from lack of advanced editing features). However, the second time I tried running it iPhoto wouldn't even load the image in the built-in image editor when I double-clicked on a photo.

I've been running iPhoto '06 on my pismo for a week now, the edit mode doesn't open at all, but iPhoto '06 is so much faster that I don't mind. I simply scale the view to largest in order to see a photo, then step through them with the arrow keys. I can rotate, which is about all I want to do in iPhoto anyway, so it works fine.

If anyone gets the edit window working, let me know, but I have read that it's dependent on CoreImage, and so might not work at all on a g3 as old as mine. More info always welcome, especially from those better informed than myself.

I suppose there is a reason for Apple ruling out installation on G3 models... I would like to run iPhoto 6 on my G3 700 mHz iBook, but I'm afraid that it will probably start to malfunction at some point... Stick with '05 or get new Mac...
