Share videos with iTunes 6.0.2 Apps
With iTunes 6.0.2, you can now share your iTunes videos with others. However, the only videos that appear are ones that have been added after the update to 6.0.2.

To allow all your videos to be shared, move them from the iTunes folder to another location, delete them in the iTunes application, and then drag-and-drop them back into iTunes. This works for all video types that iTunes supports.

Presumably, this is why my roommate and I have not been able to share podcasts, either? Well, I'll give it a try when my roommate gets home.

I've tried this process with some Handbrake converted videos (h.264 MPEG-4s) and it did not work. It only started working when I hinted the movies using QuickTime. (video passthru, audio passthru, enable streaming export options).

drebes
i have a lot of handbrake h264 encded movies. when you say you hinted the movies, did this require re-encoding or just editing in Quicktime. Grateful if you could give more detail on what you did to get these to work. I am a bit new to this.....

The movies on my "server" mac are visible as shared items in itunes on the client mac but will not start up from there.

I haven't been able to get my episodes of DL.tv to stream. I re-added them after I updated 6.0.2 and are encoded in H.264. The few movies I have that are encoded as regular MOV files (like old Quicktime trailers) are able to stream without problem.

Anyone know where there is a list of format requirements? Troubleshooting which videos work seems a bit senseless. Of 8 videos tested, only the video created for iPod works (also full screen, very poor quality).

Success - video specifically formatted for iPod
.M4v - AAC, H.264, 320 x 180, Millions

Failures
.mov - AAC, H.264, 704 x 396, Millions
.mov - AAC, H.264, 720 x 400, Millions (x6 files)

So the differences are file type and dimensions.

Failure - Dimensions changed to iPod equivalent
.mov - AAC, H.264, 320 x 180, Millions

Success - Large dimensions re-exported as Mp4 (also full screen, acceptable quality)
.mp4 - AAC, H.264, 720 x 400, Millions

Hypothesis: Dimensions can vary (at least up to 720x404) but apparently the files must be Mp4 or M4v; H.264 works, ie. codecs untested.

Doh! Mp4 - M4v- Mov and hinting
Authored by: BeezelNut RaRa on Jan 29, '06 07:15:33AM

I should have tried drebes hinting tip first. (Sorry.) I guess Mp4 and M4v files do the hinting automatically. Anyway, drebes is right. The original, large .mov files I tried merely needed hinting with QuickTime Pro (Export > Movie to Hinted Movie).

Actually, about videos aquired thru iTunes, I just imported ONE of the 40+ videos not showing upp and suddenly ALL showed up. It is as if iTunes rebuilt the video export database or something.

Great tip!

Thank You drebes. I did just like you said, and videos that would not previously play via a shared library now work perfectly. It was driving me crazy, but it seems everything is right for the holiday season!
