Export a book as a QuickTime movie in iPhoto 6 Apps
This hint has been revised and republished.

Revised Hint:

Create a book in iPhoto. With the book selected, Option-click on the Play button. The slideshow settings panel appears as it normally would. The difference, however, is that when you click the Play button in the panel, you're prompted to save the slideshow as a movie. Pick a save location, name the movie, click Export, then wait. No need to invoke iDVD...

Original hint (by anonymous, January 19, 2006):

One of the highlighted new features of iPhoto 6 is the ability to create a slideshow from a book album (there's a Play button in the toolbar below the book). This is really nice in that you can recreate the feel of thumbing through a picture book, complete with the soundtrack of your choice, and without wearing out your precious thumbs. But unlike a regular slideshow album, in a book album the File: Export menu item is disabled.

Thankfully, there's a simple workaround. Choose Share: Send to iDVD. This will generate a QuickTime movie of the book-as-slideshow, and place it in your ~user/Movies folder.

[robg adds: This worked as described, though iDVD will also launch when the export is completed. Just quit iDVD, though, and the movie file will still be there in your Movies folder.]

I haven't tried the slideshow of a book, but I did try to order a book, but it wouldn't work. A connecting dialog came up and went away and nothing came up to complete the order.

What can be done about the extra pages in a book? I have a book of only 12 pages so there's a bunch left blank. I can edit the resulting movie with QT Pro but surely there's something I'm missing.
