Use multiple remote speakers at once in iTunes Apps
Apple has been pretty quiet about this, but AirTunes now supports sending music to several Airport Expresses simulataneously. Just make sure you grab the 6.3 firmware update for the Airport Express (released on January 3rd) and iTunes 6.0.2. In the Speakers combo box, you can now select the "Multiple Speakers..." entry.

Neither the iTunes nor Airport Express updates referred to this, but from Apple's Airport Express webpage, I did find this tidbit:
Imagine being able to play your iTunes music on whichever speakers in your house you prefer —- or all at once.

Use multiple remote speakers at once in iTunes

Has anyone gotten this to work, using a Linksys WRT54G running in WDS with the airport express? I have the option the select multiple speakers, but when I do I get an error saying "Problem connecting to remote speakers". I read that certain UDP ports have to be open, but I have my firewall turned off.

It's weird because I can send to my express or play it locally, but I can't do both.

I just wish iTunes would stop 'losing' my remote speakers every time I go into sleep mode or start iTunes. It's annoying when I use FrontRow.

The new multiple speaker mode hasn't changed this much, except that it doesn't announce that the speakers can't be found. It just uses the computer's speakers without changing the indicator.

Go figure.

Has anyone found a fix for the error mentioned above. Mine reports error code -3256. I've tried with the firewall off, and I have the latest 6.3 firmware applied. (I'm running iTunes 6.0.2 on OS 10.4.4)

See error:

My error message is different. It just tells me the remote speakers cannot be found.

On the Apple discussion boards, someone suggested I change the Channel Airport uses, as I was having other problems keeping the connection up. The idea was that there was RF interference. That solved my airport issue, but didn't do anything for the lost speaker problem.

I also have this exact problem, and would be grateful if someone finds the solution to post here. I have tried different channels, encryption on/off etc. I can play to either computer or express, but not both.

There is an answer, which has worked for me at

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1494883??

Read all the way to the bottom where it cautions about allowing all UDP traffic.

Cheers

Airfoil 2 by Rogue Amoeba is also able to play to multiple Airport Expresses, but it can do it from any application, like DVD Player or VLC.

i use airfoil aswell...i like the fact that i can control the volume to the different airport expresses...until Apple offers this feature,i'll be using Airfoil....Also 1 more thing with the itunes update i can't control the volume on my remote speakers, when i go into "multiple speaker' mode..it only controls the computer speakers..

Another nice feature about using Airfoil with iTunes is that Volume Logic (http://www.octiv.com) is enabled for enhanced sound over my stereo speakers. Sending the signal via iTunes disables Volume Logic.

How is this useful?

Who has multiple airport expresses? It's awfully expensive compared to just wireless audio. Is there some product that would allow you to stream music from iTunes without an Airport express? Then it would be pretty nifty - a surround sound system without any extra gadgets or wires.

I have multiple AE units, at home and at friends' places. So this is slick, and I cannot believe I missed it.

WDS on the Cheap
Authored by: Cadre on Jan 16, '06 08:04:29PM

Anyone who wants to do WDS + WPA cheaply. Apple has pretty much the best implementation of WDS (wireless bridging) there is. Most vendors don't even support WDS + WPA (Linksys doesn't, Belkin doesn't (their website may lead you otherwise, but, when hard pressed, their tech support will admit otherwise)).

I'm kind of sick of people posting about this being a secret. It's not a secret or a hint. Just read people.

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
At the bottom of the right column is: "AirTunes Enhancement
Simultaneously stream the same song wirelessly to up to three home stereos or powered speakers — using AirPort Express with AirTunes."

It's still useful - until now, no one had told me *how* to do it. So knowing it can be done wasn't real helpful. This is a valid hint.

READ THIS! ii|ii ..

Thanks for the hint. I wasn't aware of the new enhancements, as I do not spend alot of time reading up on new software from Apple. I just download it and go.. and enjoy the surprising features found by users on macosxhints.

A long waited for feature but there's a bug. When choosing multiple destinations iTunes no longer cares about the volume settings which (at least for me) causes problems.

Same problem with speaker volume, which is a shame, as I love the ability to be on my speakers downstairs and laptop upstairs.

Heh... that happened to me right after installing 10.4.4 and rebooting.

I was stunned how loud the remote was and couldn't figure out what the problem is. I suppose I can adjust both volume levels on the remote/internal to balance it out.
