Use a Brother MFC-420CN as networked card reader Network
The Brother MFC-420CN is a multifunction scan - fax - print - copy machine that can be networked. There's also a multi-card reader in the front of the machine, for CompactFlash, SmartMedia, xD-Picture card, Memory Stick and Secure Digital media cards.

If you find out the IP of the printer (using the DeviceSelector application in /Library -> Printers -> Brother -> Utilities), you can FTP to that address and copy files over from any supported card inserted in the printer. It's not as fast as a dedicated USB card reader, but it works!

If you have an FTP app that supports Rendezvous (I mean, Bonjour), you may not even need to find the IP address yourself. Or, write down the printer name one time, instead of looking up the IP every time.

Incidentally, the 420CN is a nice device, but it seems to be MUCH slower scanning to a Mac than to a Windows box, on the same network (and the Macs I have are more powerful than my wife's Dell "craptop"). Anyone else noticed this?

i'm not sure about the slowness, but I bought this printer for my parents and it's the first printer [i've own canon, HP, epson, lexmark] that is just as equal in features as the PC version! I liked it so much that I bought myself the MFC-5440CN :)

My wife's dell box won't install all of the software for the mf420cn properly. she can't scan. XP made her jump through hoops for 4 hours and all she can do is print.
I have to scan everything and email it to her.
I laugh alot.

I can mount the printer (192.168.1.60) but I can not copy anything from Magicstick card or SD or CF. Even if it starts the transfer crashes.

I really hoped this hint would have helped more.
