Add Motorola RAZR V3i support to iSync Apps
iSync does not officially support the Motorola V3i yet -- however, you can make it work. I've not been able to coax Bluetooth into working on my Vodaphone-modified version just yet, but it is certainly possible to get iSync going via USB.

First open /Applications -> iSync.app -> (Control-click and choose Show Package Contents) -> Contents -> Plugins -> ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice -> Contents -> Plugins -> PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin -> Contents -> Resources -> MetaClasses.plist and find the entry for the RAZR V3. Duplicate this section and modify all instances of V3 to read V3i (except in the icon name).

Now plug your phone into the USB cable, open iSync and select Add Device; you should see the RAZR V3i pop-up. Double-click to add, and you are sorted.

You may receive the message "service cannot be started," especially if you've been playing with Bluetooth prior to testing the USB cable. If you restart the phone, this will go away.

Tried this a couple of times but been unable to get this hint to work. I assume sting to be modified is [modifying V3 to V3i except tiff]. Is that correct?

I tried this and the V3i successfully came up when I scanned for devices. I reset the device so the computer would overwrite the phone and I received the following error:
The connection was lost while sending some changes to the device.
Device "Razor V3i" synchronization failed

I get the same message doing this to a V3c. Curiously, the contact downloading to the phone seems to work, mostly. At least there are a good number of entries in the phone's Contacts list, and a few spot-checked entries look good.

However, the calendar shows 0 events. But, mysteriously, when I clear the calendar on the phone, it says I will be clearing 101 events.

This is worrisome, as it looks like there's some serious bug or compatibility issue. This is using the RAZR v3c plugin from http://www.briantoth.com/razr_v3c/ and a USB connection to the phone, on 10.4.4 with iSync 2.1.1.

Any hints about how to get around this?

Does this only apply to this specific version of the V3i, or do you know if it can also be done with other V3 versions? Verizon Wireless (my carrier) just started selling the Motorola RAZR V3c phone recently, which has both bluetooth and USB connections. I was thinking about getting one as an upgrade to my aging phone, but I would want to make sure I could use iSync with it. (will be a first for me with a sync compatible phone)

When I look on Apple's iSync page, it lists the Moto RAZR V3 as compatible, but I don't know if the extra "c" in the V3c makes a difference. Anyone have any experience with this?

I've been unable to get a V3c to work... Suspect it's Verizon that's crippled the phone. Who's your provider?

Well, after i posted my original query, I did a google search and found this thread which has information on how to get the V3c to work with iSync, either over BT or a USB connection.

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=780944&page=1&pp=15

It doesn't look too complicated, and somewhere down the thread someone even provides a modified .plist file you can download and drop in place.

Hope that helps. I'll be sure to keep that handy if I get a V3c.

Thanks --- this pretty much nails it. Allows iSync via USB (but not by Bluetooth) and File Browsing by Bluetooth (but not by USB). Not perfect, but for a Verizon phone it's a big help.

Consider writing an iSync Plugin instead of modifying the iSync application; otherwise you will have to repeat your actions everytime Apple updates iSync. There is a HOWTO over at the Tao of Mac.

I had success doing this myself for a Motorola C350...

Hi
How's this for a puzzle? I can't upgrade beyond OSX 10.3.4 because I use Protools . If I upgrade my OS I will have to spend a fortune on new hardware. The dilemma I have is with my V3i, seemingly I need isync v2.1 in order to follow the fix given earlier in this thread. Is there any way round the problem or do I have to return my new phone to the shop?

I have just connected my V3i to my Mac via USB and in the devices it came up with the V3i, so I synched it. It seemed to transfer my address book across, but whilst the phone numbers seem OK, the names are all jumbled up numbers. Is this work around you are suggesting going to fix this?
I am using OSX10.3.9
cheers

I've done the same thing and I have the same problem. All my contacts come up with random letters and numbers. I'm planning to upgrade to Tiger tomorrow but Ive read through some of the threads in the discussions section on the apple site but no one seems to have any luck even on 10.4 or above. Hopefully mac will sort this out in their next update, but until then make sure you deselect V3i syncronization in isync or you could lose all of your contacts.

I have 2 razr v3i's. One must have come from HK, and the other out of Europe. On the European one I can only connect via USB (after adding the posted thread to isync), while on the HK version, the BL tooth found the phone and I am able to do Bluetooth file exchange, pics, vidoe, tunes, contacts, and ical...Don't know why?

GUys, my mate has JUST bought the Moto V3i here in Hong Kong. We just fired up with isync after pairing the device and synched up the calendar.app and the address book.app immediately OVER BLUETOOTH!

WORKS FIRST TIME LIKE A CHAMP!!!!

As it was a new phone (3 hours out of the box) and he did NOT want to R.T.F.M we changed the phone back to English and we can all see (well I can read it).

BTW the phone was only $HK3680 in Mong Kok for those of you who want a good price!

Hope that helps..

Cheers Warwick

Let me get this straight: After iSync'ing the V3i -> Did the pictures from your Addressbook show up allright on your HK V3i?

BTW is it an unlocked, unbranded V3i?

There is another way to support V3i. The USB cable that coming with the phone may not allow iSync to start sync.

Use any other USB cable (Use any Camera USB cable) That will work. I used My Fuji Camera Cable successfully. no need to change any file or settings.

The Mac OS X 10.4.6 update adds support of the Motorola RAZR V3i to iSync (now version 2.2).

Unfortunately, it only supports syncing of names, phone numbers, email addresses and calendar events. Addresses and photos are not synced. If it could do that, it would be so sweet. Maybe the next update...

this offers a decent method to get file xfers with the verizon razrs via bluetooth - but I have an old g4 powermac w/out bluetooth and have not spent the time to try and hack the usb yet. looks interesting though. I have a friend who used his verizon phone as a modem and got near broadband speeds from it. however, verizon redid the software on their razr and disabled the modem feature. if somebody figures that out it would be pretty sweet. but the free nights and weekends would kill them if people were running torrents all night.

Hey all of you having problems with sync Motorola V3i with iSync 2.2 or newer. I found a fixing tool from nova media at versiontracker.
<http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/29600>;

It worked for my perfectly with 10.4.7 and iSync 2.3, even the instaler is telling to use this tool ONLY for iSync 2.2. All what it does is copying a new "MeteClasses.plist" file. Now I can sync all things like I could befor with Nokia V600.

Hope this helps other users too.

Greetings from Switzerland.
Thomas Thaler

REM:
It did also work with preview 10.4.8.

Meanwhile, Apple's iSync does officially support the V3i. I'm new to this, but I found the result of iSyncing a calendar to my V3i disappointing. For example, the V3i is not aware of multiple calendars, so everything is dumped over each other and things get messy soon. It's nowhere even near the usability of iCal.

I guess we'll have to wait for the iPhone to get this sort of functionality in a Apple kind of friendly UI.
