Migrate from evolution email to Mail to Entourage

Here's one way to move your Evolution (v 2.4.1 in my case) emails and addresses to a Mac (v 10.4.x). The intermediate steps on the way to everything in Entourage have email in Apple Mail and addresses in the Address Book, and you may prefer to stop at that point.

Read on for the step-by-step...

To move emails follow these steps:

  1. On your Linux box, tar up the .evolution folder:
      #cd ~
      #tar cvf dot_evolution.tar .evolution
  2. Copy dot_evolution.tar to your Macintosh, untar, and rename the folder. Using Terminal and assuming the dot_evolution.tar file is on the Desktop, that looks like this:
      #cd Desktop
      #tar xf dot_evolution.tar
      #mv .evolution evolution
  3. In Apple Mail, select Import Mailboxes under the File menu. Select Other and click Continue in the Import data from dialog. Navigate to the evolution folder on the Desktop and select it; then click Choose. Depending on how large your evolution folder is, it'll take a while for the Items to import box to fill up. Check or un-check the items to import (note that in the current dialog, there is no horizontal scroll bar, so seeing what's what is impossible if the evolution folder is deep). When ready, click Continue. Make tea...

  4. At this point, all your Evolution email should be in Apple Mail in a folder named Import. You can rearrage things now and be happy, or go to the next step.

  5. In Entourage, select Import under the File menu and follow the prompts to import from a program (Apple Mail, obviously). Again, you'll end up with an import folder from which you can drag and rearrange folders and emails as you like.
To move addresses, follow these steps:
  1. On your Linux box, start up Evolution and go to Contacts. Select all (Ctrl+A) and select "Save as VCard..." under the File menu.
  2. Assuming the file was saved as list.vcf, move it to your Mac.
  3. Open Address Book on the Mac, and select Import vCards under the File menu. Locate the list.vcf file and voila. You are done here if you like, otherwise...
  4. To move the addresses to Entourage, open Entourage and select your address book. In Apple's Address Book, select all addresses and drag and drop into the Entourage addresses window.
Again, this has been tested with Evolution 2.4.1 and Mac OS X 10.4.3.
