10.4: Enter multiple lines in PDF forms in Preview Apps
Tiger only hintMac OS X 10.4 added the capability to fill out PDF forms in Preview. However, if you hit Return while entering information in a form field, Preview de-selects that field, so that you can't enter any more data. If you want to enter more than one line in the field, there isn't a documented way to do so. Contrast this with Adobe's Reader, where hitting Return just gives you a carriage return and allows you to continue typing on a new line in that field.

I discovered that you can, in fact, enter multiple lines in a field in Preview. You simply need to hit Option-Return instead of just Return. This does not seem to be documented in the help file.

[robg adds: I think Option-Return may be a standard Cocoa feature, as this same trick works in iChat to send a multiple-line message.]

It also works in MSN Messenger. Out of interest, I was using Adium to combine my MSN and iChat account, but whenever someone tries to directly connect it totally flakes out and I have to restart it. Anyone had any experience fixing this? I've heard it's a problem with libgaim which Adium uses?

Thanks

there's a page on DirectConnect on the Adium wiki. make sure you have port 4443 open.

Tried that...

It still messes up most of the time!

It's a shame because Adium is really cool apart from the obvious bug!

Thanks

this is a standard AppKit feature. an alternative is pressing ctrl-q (quote-char — emacs users should recognise it), followed by return.

Command-Option-Return gives you multiple lines in a single cell in MS Excel. (I thought it would be Opt-Return, as the WinXP version is Alt-Return, but, alas, it isn't.)

Same works in forms (like the Search & Replace form in SubEthaEdit) to bypass the OK-button. Press ALT + Return to get a newline, Return only to confirm the form/dialog.
Sometimes ALT + TAB works, too. However, Safari and Camino lost the feature to enter a Tab in a textarea via ALT-Tab.
