Use the new standardized RSS icon in Safari Web Browsers
I've always disliked Safari's RSS icon (and the even-worse XML icon) used for RSS feeds, so as soon as Microsoft and Firefox agreed upon a new icon, I immediately wanted Safari to use it. It turns out to be pretty simple, and you can see the results in the image at right.

First, download the new standard icon from Matt Brett's new Feed Icons site. Second, use GraphicConverter or other means to save the 16x16 icons as .tif files. Finally, replace the ShowRSSButton.tif and ShowRSSButton_Pressed.tif files in /Applications -> Safari.app -> (Control-click and Show Package Contents) -> Contents -> Resources with the orange and gray converted files, respectively.

The usual warnings apply about making a copy before modifying files, etc.

that icon has no alpha channel, though — hence the black corners. also, it doesn't affect the 'Hide' button (viewed when you're actually on a feed page).

I made a pack of icons for Safari, including the Hide icon, using Core Image Fun House based on Matt Brett's distribution. instructions are included. I submitted a hint about it, but it apparently wasn't accepted…

Yeah, thank you for your great set of icons.
I am disappointed that Orange was the picked color for the standard since it conflicts somewhat with the orange SnapBack arrow. Maybe blue to match the old RSS icon would be more appropriate for the Mac?

Here is a complete set of 4 (the folder named Safari_RSS_Icons_Blue.tar.bz2) with alpha channels and blue (like boredzo's) but more closely following Safari's color scheme for the HideRSSButton and HideRSSButton_Pressed (unlike boredzo's):

Combined blue + orange
Authored by: arasinen on Dec 28, '05 02:51:39AM

I combined the two sets given in the comments. Now my ShowRSS -buttons are orange (from boredzo) and HideRSS are blue (from gaoshan). This combination feels like a winner and isn't that much in conflict with the existing color schemes.

To be specific, I took ShowRSS* files from both sets and renamed the blue buttons to HideRSSButton*.

I think my installation of iLife '08 may have gotten rid of my "custom" rss icon. Gotta redo it now. Hmm... I think that's what did it anyway.
