Install a newer Microtek scanner driver Apps
Microtek Scanner Drivers. Yeah we all know they're not so great on OS X (an understatement, of course!). I have an X12 USL and have been unable to find an update more recent than version 7.11. In searching for an answer, I found this link on the Netherlands Microtek site, which has a link on it called Can't find my driver!. This link directs you to the Singapore Microtek Driver download page -- truly the word wide web, eh?

Anyway, there is a version 7.22 there that works with Panther, whoo hooo! You have to first manually uninstall all the other Microtek drivers, though. There is a further driver update there for the X12 USL ScanMaker as well.

It works. That's all I can say. Thought I'd share the info, as the Microtek scanner saga with OS X is not so nice, and will any Mac owners ever buy a new Microtek scanner? I don't think so...

[robg adds: This older hint contains an alternative method of installing Microtek drivers. Note that I haven't tested either hint, as I don't have a Microtek scanner.]

Update: An anonymous tipster wrote in saying "Microtek has an open ftp (ftp://ftp.microtek.com) site that has newer versions (beta) than they post on their site. I have used these over the years to keep my 5700 running. Use at your own risk."

Install a newer Microtek scanner driver

My Aunt recently bought an iMac and gave me the rebate for the printer. In a blink of an eye I sold my Microtek scanner and bought an HP PSC. While the quality isn't quite as high as my Microtek, it's close enough for anything but really intensive picture scanning. As nice of scanners as Microtek makes, their drivers are terrible. IMHO, even the PC drivers aren't as good as the PC drivers that HP offers.

It's been a long time since I tried it myself, but VueScan is a great alternative for many scanner packages. The list of MicroTek models supported is fairly extensive.

VueScan is the way to go

I had nothing but trouble with my Microtek scanner until I purchased Vuescan. It really saved my scanner from the garbage truck. It is a shame that the support is so bad because the scanner in itself is great, well, since I can make it actually scan...

Thanks for that link to the 7.22 driver:

http://202.39.72.2/Singapore/Web/driver-page/SM.php

I just installed Tiger recently (currently running 10.4.11) and my old drivers wouldn't work with my Microtek ScanMaker i320 (neither would VueScan or ImageCapture). Before installing the new driver, I erased all old Microtek, ScanWizard, ScanMaker, etc. files.

I did custom install and only installed the "iXXX" packages (a scary moment when i320 wasn't listed, but it works anyway).

Note: when I downloaded the driver offered on the Microtek site (ScanWizard 5 version 7.56) I got a message saying the image was damaged...
