How to wake a 'sleeping' Print dialog System
When your input method is active (i.e. as I am a Japanese, a black "A" is usually in the menu bar instead of the American flag), if you print from an old application (ie AppleWorks) which shows a print dialog window instead of a sheet type dialog, you often can't change the number of copies or page range in the dialog window. It seems like the text boxes on the dialog window are "sleeping" and won't wake to be changed.

The fix is quite funny. Just 'shake' the dialog window, by changing the input method, then they wake up. I found an English explanation of the process.

[robg adds: I haven't run into this glitch before, and I couldn't reproduce it using 10.4.3 and AppleWorks 6.2.9. However, based on the linked article, it seems the problem is real enough, so here's the solution if you're among those affected.]

How to wake a 'sleeping' Print dialog

Thanks for the tip. This has been bugging me for the last month since migrating to 10.4.3. In my case it's a combination of Appleworks and TypeIt4Me with its own Input Method resulting in intermittent inability to change no of copies. Toggling TypeIt4Me off now allows me to enter the number of copies.

i face the same problem on AI10. my solution is switch to us flag with mouse click on menu item before input pages into print dialog. however i used to switch between the japanese black "A" and chinese input using hotkey, after i input pages with the us flag, the hotkey no longer give me chinese input but switch between us flag and japanese "A"

with pi314's hints, i found i can also switch to chinese and back to japanese to "wake up" the pages input also, that will keep my prefer chinese/japanese input switch and never see the us flag again (i like all the menu items in black, the colour us flag is really annoying. for those who use only one input method, you won't see that on the menu bar)
