In Swedish, for example, the word for harddrive is hårddisk, so if one has named the harddrive to what it actually is, Windows Media Player simply can't play files on it.

A possible fix for unplayable Windows Media files

The fabulous video program VLC plays most of the video files that I come across. One exception is some, but not all, Windows Media files (with a .wmv-suffix). So, I go to the not-so-fabulous Windows Media Player 9, which also fails, saying something about that the streaming type is unknown. It doesn't have to be. Make sure that the path to the file you're trying to open does not contain any odd (non-ASCII) characters. That is, the name of the disk, the folders and finally the actual .wmv file must contain only ASCII characters.

the main problem with VLC and WMP9 is that they don't play WMV3 files...only the PC-only WMP10 plays WMV3 files. maybe it's not a problem with VLC, rather a stupid Microsoft problem again, not updating WMP9 to play those WMV3 files.

You want these guys.
fli4mac
Geez, it is about time these guys got a mention here! I've been searching hints and forums for flip4mac for weeks. A very useful tool and well worth the ~$10...... The best way to handle Window media sh*t. Unfortunately, like MicroSucks Player for Mac, it doesn't do 10 content.

Thank you so much for this!! I always name my hard drives in Quenya, like "Dûr Taurë" or "Cirith Mîrë". And WMP doesn't run. Looks like I'm gona be keeping my new Tolkein-derived names: Turambar and Vingilot.
WMV3-in-AVI Files
I've also seen files that were WMV3 in an AVI wrapper.
As far as I know, the only way to play them is using WMV3Server: Hope you can read Japanese :)

Far from me the idea of defending WMP. But as a general rule, since we are now in a unix world, it's a good idea to avoid non ascii chars. It will break a few scripts and terminal commands.

This worked for me too. I was extra pissed because not only were the new Windows Media files not working, I checked some I had saved that I used to be able to play and now could not. I had updated Windows Media Player, VLC even download MPlayer all to no avail. Then I did some googling and found this. |
