It's quite easy to trick Aperture to run with less than 1GB of RAM. I have a G4 1.33Ghz Powerbook with 500Mb ram, so here's the trick:
Go to the Aperture application, control-click on it and select Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu. In the directory named Contents, there's a file called Info.plist; drag it to TextEdit to open it.
Find the line that reads AELMinimumRAMSize, and below it you'll see 1000. Change this to 500 (or the desired amount of RAM), save the file, and quit TextEdit.
Now you have Aperture running without the 1GB RAM restriction.
[robg adds: As with the previous Aperture tip, keep in mind that you're now working in an experimental environment, and should exercise caution -- who knows what may happen when Aperture runs into memory issues. Hopefully it just gets quite slow due to heavy virtual memory use.]
