Sometimes I receive winmail.dat files in my e-mail, and the message itself seems totally empty. These files come from MS Outlook users on a PC who have the setting "Create messages in MS Office 200X format" active.
When you ask the sender to change the setting to HTML or RTF format for new mail messages, you will not receive winmail.dat files anymore from that sender. An alternative when you cannot ask the sender to change these settings is to use this older hint to display the contents of the message from within Mail.app.
I tried that shortcut (Command-[) on a message that contained a winmail.dat file, and voila, the text of the message appeared. It will, however, only display the text in plain text format
In the past, I also used the utility TNEF's Enough to display the content of these files, but don't need that anymore.
