Read Hotmail with Mail.app Apps
I was fed up with having to go to the hotmail website and sign in to be able to veiw my emails, so I had a look around the internet and tried various alternatives, but eventually struck gold with Mail.app. In Mail, add a new account (in the Accounts section of its preferences) and choose a POP3 type of account. Fill in all your details and email address. The POP3 server's name is pop3hot.com, and the SMTP server is smtp.hotpop.com.

It worked for me, if you have any problems just post a comment and I'll try to respond...

[robg adds: This older hint seemed to indicate that an external plug-in was required for this trick, either httpmail (which is still in active development) or hotwayd, whose project page now throws up a SQL error. I have not tested any of these solutions...]

It is worth mentioning that Hotmail doesn't offer POP or SMTP, this is a third party service.

I've been using httpmail as long as I've had my Mac, it works quite well and doesn't have that extra bit of going through another website. As others have noted, it just seems dangerous to be using another site to pass your credentials through.

{shudder}
Apart from what was saidabove, it gets even worse.
What might not be clear to most people, is that the company used for retreiving mail is a vague company by the name of IzySoft (http://www.izysoft.com/ (funky site, btw)), who I guess can expect to be shut down by either Micorsoft or Yahoo soon?

And the worst part is that your mail outgoing mail is going through a different company (http://www.hotpop.com/), which isn't even trying to do anything with hotmail. They just appear to have their mail-servers set up poorly, allowing anyone to send through them.

again... {shudder}

Hmm, if Hotpop's email servers are being used as open relays, that means spammers are using them as open relays as well. That means one of two things are going to happen:

-Hotpop's mail servers are going to end up on more and more anti-spam blacklists, making it less and less likely that email sent through them will actually reach anyone;

-Hotpop's sysadmins will eventually get a clue and close the relay, meaning people will eventually be unable to send their Hotmail email from their desktops, at least through hotpop's servers.

In order to make Mail work with hotmail.com, I use http://www.freepops.org/en/

And the Mac version of that is MacFreePops.

I find it to be a more robust solution than extensions you add inside Mail.app.

The http-mail plug-in was busted by the 10.4.3 update according to many posts in the Apple Discussion Forums.

But two other plug-in/add-on options are still working fine, MacFreePOPs (free, a little tricky) and MailForward (shareware, easy).

It still works under Panther though, so if you're still on that (like myself) it's worth using :)

Hopefully someone will come out with a fix for Tiger soon.

Why use Microsoft Hotmail?????????/

May I suggest http://fastmail.fm

They have free accounts and cheap membership accounts. Awesome stuff. (No affiliation, happy user. :-)

I second this, and add that if you have a Hotmail account you *must* check, Fastmail will do it for you. Simple instructions on the package. (I'm also unaffiliated, and a longtime happy user.)

I have been using the same hotmail account for longer than MS has owned it :) So I'm reluctant to switch to another account, not having to change the email address was the primary reason for me to use a web-based email account in the first place! :)

If I were to switch it wouldn't be to gmail though, I really don't want to be part of a service that reads every piece of mail I send or receive and serves up advertising to me based on it. I try to block all the ads I can as it is, last thing I need is more of it! Not to mention the total lack of privacy. (sure, other sites MIGHT be scanning also, but I don't think they are actually ACTING on all the info, just scanning for certain keywords)

So instead of using a service where they tell you exactly what they are doing with your email (automatically scanning it for keywords and offering keyword related advertisements that are unobtrusive) You would rather use a company that secretly scans your emails and does something with it while offering obtrusive advertising with flashy graphics?

what graphics? I am using mail.app to get my mail, there's no graphics involved :) besides, I've had the address for YEARS, and have still manage to avoid the over-flooding of spam that I would get in less than a month on ISP provided accounts (the very worst being AOL)

Thanks mate it works great with 10.3.9 Excellent answer to my problem and works with entourage 2004 which would not let you check hotmail unless you got the upgraded account
