10.4: Add Canon EOS350D RAW support to 10.4.3 System 10.4
Tiger only hintI've been annoyed with the lack of RAW support for the Canon EOS 350D for a long time, and had high hopes that 10.4.3 would fix this, as it seemed to be the OS version that Aperture was waiting for. However, I was dismayed to find that 10.4.3 still hasn't gotten it right. After some prodding, I went and delved into the update's .pax file, and found an interesting file called Raw.plist, which has a list of all the RAW formats that the system supports.

To my astonishment, there is already support for the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, which is simply the US name for the 350D: looking closely at the statements showed that it was likely to be the ASCII string that the RAW importer was searching for, so after a quick strings on one of my RAW, files I simply copied the XT section and renamed the initial key to Canon-EOS 350D DIGITAL, and now both iPhoto and Preview understand my files. I've no idea if this was actually in an earlier 10.4 release (my guess is that not long after the 20D was added, the XT support would have gone in.

So if you want EOS 350D RAW support, here's what to do. Add this chunk of XML to the file Raw.plist, which is found in this directory (formatted for copy-and-paste into the Terminal):
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/\
Versions/A/Frameworks/ImageIO.framework/Versions/A/Resources
You will need Administrator rights to alter this file, of course.

[robg adds: I haven't tested this one, and I would recommend backing up the file before you start editing it.]

As the original submitter, I would strongly suggest that you grab the file from my site, as the original XML chunk gives a horrid colour cast to the images. Phil Chapman on the Apple Discussion boards found an extra set of values from the Powershot G6 entry are required to give a clean result.

Ahem. A link would have been good...

The main post and the new XML data.

Obviously, it's a good idea to review that file (or build your own from the basic 10.4.3 one) before placing it anywhere on your system, especially as it requires Admin rights.

"Rebel XT" RAW files work fine for me after the 10.4.3 upgrade, without any additional changes.

Yes, we know that from reading the links in the post of the hint's submitter. But the point of his submission is to fix RAW support for the European sibling of the Rebel XT, which is the 350D.

Many thanks to minimal. This resolves the issue.

Are you saying that this hack is needed for a non-US version of the Rebel XT but not the US version?

That's precisely what he's saying! If you look at the existing Raw.plist file on your 10.4.3 system, you'll notice that Rebel XT is listed but not 350D (while Rebel and 300D are both listed).

Another way would be to convert your files to Adobe's DNG format and then you'll be good to go since OSX supports DNG regardless of what camera originally created it.

That's not true. If a camera isn't supported by OS X, it will refuse to read it even after converting to .dng.

Great! Thank you very much!
I was always wondering why Finder can show a preview of raw images, but Preview can't.

Doesn't work with the japanese Version

According to string my Camera name is "Canon EOS Kiss Digital N". So I tried with this, but Preview is still ignoring my files, saying they are corrupted or not supported.

Is there anything more to do than to edit the plist file actually?

No, all I did was edit the plist, but do watch out for the - (minus sign) in the name: I didn't just use the string directly from the camera file as that said 'Canon EOS', but the Apple plist wanted 'Canon-EOS'.

Does that help ?

No, sadly not. I not only tried it with and without - but also to write all in capital, or just one word. Put another dash after EOS (like the 1D have). But Preview just doesn't want to. I doubt I have to reboot or so. The only thing I did is to quit Preview after each try, then edit the plist file, close the editor (vim) and retry.

Anyway I reported this issue to apple. I have they fix this in one of the next bug-fixes they get out.

Panasonic DMC-LX1

I have an unsupported Panasonic DMC-LX1 and went into the Raw.plist and switched a profile I found for the DMC-LC1 by simply replacing the "C" with X. It seems to work now to let me import my DNG raw files into iPhoto. Preview still will not open them though.
