When I'm encoding a CD and I want to delete some tracks from my iTunes library at the same time, iTunes shows me a progress bar for "Deleting songs...", which curiously coincides with the progress for the current encoding task.
I was doing this recently: Encoding an entire classical CD as one track (for processing with Chapter Tool), and I wanted to get rid of the separate movements I'd encoded some months back. Being the unreasonably impatient sort that expects a multitasking, multi-threaded OS to do things simultaneously, I started "annoying" iTunes by clicking my mouse button in its window. Wonder of wonders, the "Deleting songs..." progress bar sped up, and the tracks were gone in a few moments, rather than minutes. So here's the hint:
When you're encoding tracks in iTunes 6 and you want to delete tracks at the same time, hold the mouse button down in the iTunes window to hurry file deletion along.
[robg adds: I think the Chapter Tool referred to above is the one we covered in this hint back in June.]
