10.4: Mail search breaks when excluded from Spotlight Apps
Tiger only hintThis is kind of a non-hint. Maybe everybody else already knew this, but if you exclude Mail Messages from Spotlight's search results -- in the Spotlight System Preferences panel, Search Results tab -- you then cannot search your messages from within Mail. That's not what it says in the preferences panel, though: "Only selected categories will appear in Spotlight search results." To me, that doesn't mean that searching in Mail will fail as well.

It took me a while to figure out why I could not find anything in Mail...

I cannot confirm this. I have excluded mail messages from the Spotlight search results and searching within Mail.app works fine.

I can also confirm I have NOT had this issue. I've had mail message Spotlight searching disabled for a long time now to help reduce the clutter and redraws in the Spotlight popup menu. If I need to find an email I instinctively go to Mail.app to find it. Always worked just fine.

but did you read this one before posting it? Just like the two previous posters, I do not have this issue...

P.S. I still love you! ;-)

i actually do have this problem. specifically, my mail is stored on an encrypted virtual volume. i've not told spotlight to ignore this volume, but apparently tiger ignores such volumes automatically.

i appreciate that, in general, my encrypted volume's contents are indexed when it's mounted, but the fact that i can't search any of my mail makes Mail.app pretty unusable..

i hope i'm missing something obvious... :- /

ok - so i'm somewhat wrong. spotlight did indeed search my mounted encrypted volume (though if i drag the volume onto the system preferences list of things not to index (or click '+' and Choose the volume itself) it won't add it to the list); however my mail itself isn't indexed.

perhaps it's because my mail is soft linked from ~/Library/Mail to the virtual drive and spotlight is funky with links?
