Convert existing video podcasts for use on iPod Video System
Just a helpful hint for any new iPod with Video owners out there. I wanted a way to move video podcasts that were not originally formatted for the video-enabled iPod onto it, while still keeping the videos in the podcasts list. Since I was unable to find a method for manually adding items into a podcast list, I came up with this simple solution.

First find where the video is stored on your drive, and then use Quicktime Pro to convert the video into an iPod-compatible format (320x240). Then take the moviename.m4v file and just rename it to moviename.mov (or whatever the original format was called), and copy it back to the folder where the original file was, replacing the old file. Now it should play just fine in iTunes and on your iPod, and still keep all the original info and be listed in your podcast directory.

If you are AppleScripting this process, be sure to export the opened movie "as iTunes" using the name of the exported file and adding the ".m4v" extension, rather than the ".m2v" which QTP will use (erroneously?)

A nice feature in iTunes would be to have an

Advanced->Convert Selection to iPod Video

much like it has an

Advanced->Convert Selection to AAC

I'll second that request! I'd also add an option in the prefs for MPEG4 rather than H.264 simply because the H.264 conversion takes too darn long.

iSquint, which will do the conversion for many of the vodcasts that aren't already in iPod=compatible format, may be found here:

Fast and free.

Are there any automator actions or Applescripts available for doing this already? I was looking at Automator tonight, but I could not find a way to export a movie in iPod format. I do have QuickTime Pro 7.0.3 installed on my Mac.
