Use a Smart Playlist to avoid streamed music in iTunes

Although I like internet radio, and have a number of subscribed stations in my Library, I would often like to listen to my local music files without getting into a neverending internet stream. Rather than unchecking all radio stations manually, it is possible to use a Smart Playlist to do the work for you. There are two ways to this, at least. Create a new smart playlist with either of these criteria:

FYI/FWIW: The AppleScript Downstream by Jack Gill removes radio station streams from the main library to a selected playlist, allowing you to keep them completely separate from your audio tracks. Good for organization, and eliminates the chance of hitting a stream on a library shuffle.

Sorry. Link above should be Downstream.

You could make a smart playlist that includes the rule "Genre is not Audiobook." (Replace "Audiobook" with the genre used by your audiobooks)

For the main library, choose "Show Search Bar" from the Edit menu, and the rest should be obvious. This is also good for keeping podcasts out from the main library, etc.

Why not select the audio book and then choose Get Info. In the Options tab there is a check box labeled "Skip when shuffling".

I used to filter streams out by length. Their length is zero if I remember correctly; also they have size "Stream" which might be zero.

Why not create a playlist called, say "net radio" and just drag whatever radio/net stations in there. This way they won't show up in the main Lib (and never play by accident). Just another way to do it I suppose...

I have tried 'Downstream' script but never got it to work (will re-download and try again). However, I neither have been able to create a playlist and have a file there that is not in the main Library. I also (unless there is some keyboard combination I have not bothered to locate) delete files from the library when viewing a playlist. I can only delete from the playlist.

I don't have an answer to most of that (I too would like to be able to exclude things from the Library but keep them in playlists.) |
