This works in Safari and QuickTime Player on Mac OS X 10.4.2 with QuickTime 7.0.3. I haven't tested other apps or configurations.

Rewind/fast-forward QuickTime movies via trackpad

Today, by accident, I found out that when you move the mouse cursor over a QuickTime movie and scroll up/down using two fingers on the two-finger-scrolling trackpad built into the latest PowerBooks and iBooks, the movie will fluently rewind/wind.

Works on 10.3.9 w/ QT 7.0.3. Also, two-finger scrolling horizontally controls volume.

Also seems to pause it (though that's easily fixed with a hit of the spacebar to resume).

This is also possible (as I accidently found it to be true the other day, too) with a scroll wheel - which might explain why the two finger trick is virtical - not horizontal. No? :)

QuickTime's supported using a scroll wheel like that for a while - so using the 'vertical' movement for the timeline scrub makes sense, as most mice with scroll wheels only /have/ vertical movement.

yeps, the same here, up and down jogs thru movie (i wouldn't call it ff/rew, as one scroll goes only one frame which is good for cutting; i didn't find any modifiers making it faster, only shift extends selection in qt pro) and left/right sets volume.

Yes it was working great all this years (especially liked quick-scroll in QuickView'ed videos in 10.5.x)
Unfortunately it's broken in 10.6.x
(And no, having QTPro7 installed doesn't help it)
Can anybody here devise a hack to restore this functionality?
