Convert an iTunes Podcast file into a standard MP3 file Apps
iTunes organizes the podcast files in the Podcasts folder. That's a problem for podcasts that post individual MP3 music files, and not radio shows. iTunes recognizes these files as podcasts, even when you change the info on the file. By following the instructions below, you will convert an MP3 podcast to a regular MP3 file. This will keep it organized as a regular MP3 file in iTunes (artist/album/file), and not in the Podcasts folder.

WARNING: User of these instructions will be responsible for any kind of damage that may occur to his/her iTunes library...
  1. Select the file from your Podcast folder.
  2. Change all data you need -- "artist," "album" etc...
  3. Make a copy of the cover art for this file by dragging it to the desktop.
  4. Select the Advanced -> Convert ID3 Tags menu item.
  5. Check ID3 tag version, and select "v1.0" from the drop-down menu.
  6. Drag the file to the desktop (this will make a copy of the MP3 on the desktop)
  7. Delete the file from the iTunes list.
  8. Drag the copy of the file you have on the Desktop back into iTunes.
  9. Search for the file in the Library, and add the cover art again to the file.
Now the file is out of the Podcasts folder and works like a regular MP3 file inside iTunes.

What's the difference between this method and the following:

- select the podcast in your Music Library
- get the Info Panel (COMMAND+I)
- go to the Options Tab (COMMAND+3)
- deselect the last two checkboxes (in English, this must be something like "Remember Playback position" and "Do not select in Shuffle Mode")
- Close the Info Panel

Does this not give a normal MP3 file?

Removing and re-importing the file worked for me (I like to convert my podcasts to Apple Lossless anyway).

This probably only works if you re-encode the file. I was unable to to just drag from iTunes (or copy the original file) and re-import it and get the files out of the Podcast playlist. (All of my testing was done w/ the MP3s from the Sub Pop podcast.)

Anyway, this whole topic was covered in this thread. While the above method appears to work natively in iTunes (nice!), interested readers should make sure to read the other thread for some great UNIX tools to automate this.

Not elegant, but here's a procedure that works for iTunes 6.02:

1. Get info on the track in iTunes to locate the mp3 file. (Or just browse the Podcast folder inside your iTunes library folder.)

2. From the command line:
strings <file.mp3> | grep -i http
and you'll see the location from which the file was downloaded

3. Download the file manually

4. Add it to your iTunes library manually

Okay, I know this is a Mac forum and the solution I am suggesting works on Windows but if it tooks me hours to find out to to easily fix this problem in iTunes and there may be some Mac software out there that does the same thing.

1. Get MP3Tag. http://www.mp3tag.de/en/index.html
2. Once installed get the software to point to the location of your MP3's
3. Control-A/Select all the files
4. Right click and select Extended Tags. This will bring up the metadata.
5. Look for ITUNESPODCAST and click on to select.
6. Click on the red cross to delete

Your files can now be added to the Library as Music instead of Podcasts.

It is a nice non-techo way of doing this.

I tried using FixID3Tag which seems to be a popular way to change the Tags but I found it too slow and fiddly.

http://www.pixeltree.org/code/

(Many thanks to the creater of FixID3Tag as his webpage and the many links to his solution finally pointed me in the right direction of what software solution to look for and what was causing my problem in the first place)

Using the above process I was able to update several hundred mp3 in a few minutes.

On the flipside you could add the ITUNESPODCAST tag to your MP3's and make iTunes see the file as a Podcast.

To quickly and sync your newly converted files Itunes Library Updater is great.

http://itlu.ownz.ch

Just make yourself a profile to update your updated MP3 and process and it will add/sync your new files to the Library. As well as add in your new files it can clean up all the lost links etc.

There is a much simpler way than has been discussed here.

1. Select files in podcast.
2. Go to "Get Info"
3. In Options Tab, change Media Kind to Music
(If you want it to no longer skip when shuffling, change that also, same goes for remember playback info)

The podcasts are now in your library, no need to create new an delete old files. This works for the most recent update of itunes (9), not sure about earlier versions.
