Restore a missing Sharing preference pane System
All of a sudden, I noticed that my Sharing preferences panel was missing from the System Preferences. The actual SharePref.prefpane did exist in my System folder, though, along with all my other system pref panes. After some Googling, I found a post on MacNN.com where someone said this happened after installing Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) client, as ARD actually modifies the prefpane with its own settings.

I hadn't installed ARD, as I run Tiger and it's included. But I had recently enabled the built-in VNC server on the ARD panel. Since I don't own Pacifist, and I had no intention of spending money on an app to use once, I wasn't going to easily get the pane from my OS X install DVD.

So what I did was download the ARD client update from Apple's Remote Desktop page. After running this, my Sharing prefpane magically re-appeared in System Preferences panel.

Restore a missing Sharing preference pane

Oh My Gawd!!!

I hate this 'feature'. I almost never want to search for the string I use to google with. Rarely am I using an actual congiguous phrase for google. I am using disjointed keywords.

Cloverleaf-F and Google are use the strings completely differently.

Worse, that means I have to retype the normal search string after every google search.

Even WORSE, it changes the search string in every program. Even ones that have nothing to do with it, like my programming editor. Bad bad bad bad.

I am dying to read a Hint that allows me to stop this behavior entirely.

Sincerely,
TQ White II

Thanks for the tip. Since installing ARD, I haven't been able to load the Sharing Pref Pane. The fixes I've found online haven't helped. I'll give this a shot, maybe it will help.

Mine disappeared during the Leopard install:
Tried the hint to install ARD, no luck.
Tried the hint to rm ~/Library/Caches/.*pref.* , no luck.

nothing worked. so I did the following.
1) logged into my other mac running 10.5
2) tar'd up the prefpane in /System/Library/PreferencePanes
3) scp'd the tarball over to the broken mac
4) mv'd the borked prefpanefile
5) untar'd the copied prefpane
6) opened Sys Prefs and there it was.
