Fix missing video thumbnails in iTunes6 Apps
if you're like me and all your videos in iTunes 6 are missing thumbnails, I figured out the solution. Open the video in QuickTime Pro and click View: Set Poster Frame. Save the video and reimport into the iTunes Library. Now your video will show its image (and cool reflection) in the Videos section of the program.

[robg adds: When I tested this, I didn't have any issues with imported videos missing thumbnails -- even those that had no poster frame set in QuickTime appeared with an image. However, when there was a poster frame set in QuickTime, iTunes respected it and used that image for the thumbnail.]

You don't even need to re-import it - if you play the video within iTunes (either in another window, or in the 'album art' frame at bottom left), then you can pause it, right-click and select the poster frame there too.

It will immediately update the thumbnail in the 'Video' panel of iTunes.

Disclaimer: I have QT Pro, so I can't tell if this is true for those without - but the original hint stated you needed it anyhow.

I don't have QuickTime Pro, but I do have the Set Poster Frame command in iTunes... however, it doesn't seem to do anything on my system.

I don't know if it's a bug that causes Set Poster Frame to appear in iTunes without QuickTime Pro, a bug that causes it not to work without QuickTime Pro, or just something constrained to my system.

Same here, and I'm pretty sure I do have QT, it just dosen't do anything :(
Besides, it would be strange to have a command that does nothing if you don't have QT pro ...

I can't set poster frames from within iTunes 6 for SOME video files. This is a bit weird. .mov files created with QTPro 7 will work, some .mpg (mpeg 1) files will work but others wont (these files have been d/l off the net) and the .m4v files created using the new "Movie to iPod" export option in QT 7.03 will not allow me to set poster frames in iTunes or save them from QT Pro after having set the poster frame.

My work around for the .m4v files is to open them in QT Pro, select the frame I want as poster frame and copy it, add file to iTunes, get info, select artwork tab and paste. This will set the poster frame to what I choose. Clumsy ... but after stuffing about all day ... best I can do.

some of my videos mystify me, i have the first 9 episodes of Lost Season some of them i can change the artwork no problem others it's actually greyed out in the get info, i used the save as referance movie in quicktime pro so i can play divx files, and i just can't get around the greyed out thing, other than converting them to mp4 and reducing the quality (which no doubt it would)
