Make a QuickTime movie from text Apps
If you cut and paste text from Stickies (or other pure-text source) into QuickTime Pro, it is converted into a QuickTime movie. Add a space and it extends the time the text is on the screen. Paste scaled, and you have a QuickTime movie of changeing text. If you try this from Word, then it won't work. I guess you could make a movie with text and pictures from Stickies.

[robg adds: This is more a curiosity to me than anything that might be actually useful. The results I saw seemed to depend on the source. Text copied and pasted from Safari came out as blue on black. Rich text (styled and colored) pasted in from TextEdit seemed to work just fine (also comes in over a black background). I'm not sure why one might wish to use QuickTime Pro to add text in this way (anyone?), but it does work...]

You can also drag and drop a text file on the QT Player icon to see something interesting...

It is useful - QT uses text file for generating subtitles for movies. See the QT help files on Apple's website for more details.

And another use for this... I was recently asked to come up with an easy way for teachers (k-4) to have a movie with sound showing the words in a sentence and having each word highlighted as the narrator speaks the word.

Use this tip, move it into iMovie... it's got me thinking :)

In addition to subtitles, text can also be used to create chapters and links (HREF tracks).

All info can be found here:

QT text tracks

Thanks for the links. I accidentally discovered QuickTime text tracks quite awhile ago (via Toast; go figure :-)) but didn't realize they could be formatted. That seems to be the solution I've been searching for with a project I'm tinkering with... cool!

It is very important to note that by adding text in this manner, the text automatically scales smoothly with the movie's size, unlike text added as a graphic that becomes blocky or blurred as it is magnified.

Do the people at Apple ever stop thinking about these things?!

ASCIIMoviePlayerSample

This hint reminded me of a program I came across years ago and even though it is only semi-related, I thought I would post about it on the off chance that someone might find it interesting. It's called ASCIIMoviePlayerSample and it's free from Apple (you can get it here) and what it does is convert QuickTime movies to ASCII on the fly so you can view them in the Terminal. I realize that sounds a little odd but the effect is very cool. Check it out if you've got a few spare minutes.

Definately very cool - note the last comment in the code:
<4> 07/19/05 DTS added universal binary compatibility for macintosh
