Enter Address Book birthday info via relative dates Apps
In Tiger's Address Book (not sure about previous versions), you can enter the current person's birthday into their vcard using words only, not dates.

For example, let's say today is Monday, October 10, 2005. In the birthday field, if you enter "today" and then tab out or click outside that field, his birthday will be set to October 10, 2005. You can also enter "next Monday" and his birthday will be set to October 17, 2005. You can also enter "last Sunday" or "yesterday," and his birthday will be set to October 9, 2005. Of course, "tomorrow" works as well to set his birthday to the 11th.

Unfortunately, strings like: "tomorrow he will be 26" do not set the birthday to October 11, 1979. You will still have to edit the year manually. However, this will probably still save you a few keystrokes. Here's to hoping even better parsing will be available in future versions.

[robg adds: I tried a few other words, but only had success with "last year," which does what you might expect. This also works in 10.3.]

I wish Address Book wouldn't force you to provide a year for birthdays. I have friends and acquaintances whose birth years I don't know - and don't need to know. Why not allow just a month and day entry?

I would actually like the option of putting in the birth year, so that the age in iCal would be displayed like it is in Agenda on my old Psion i.e. Auntie Nellie (1928, 77 years). This has cut short many discussions about the age of our relatives in my family.

The year thing is address book's greatest failing, imho. I just don't know when most of my friends were born, and sometimes I'm not even sure how old they are. But I do know their birthdays, because I went to a party once, and would like to remember it in the future. Sure, I can just set it as "Sept. 24 2005" and be happy, but that's really wrong. I wish I could say "26 today" and have it calculate the birth year...

Entering "1975" is annoying when it turns out later to have been '74, simply because this is TOO MUCH thought for my address book/reminders.

Come on Apple, help a guy out.

Eh? You just said the problem was that you don't know how old your friends were, so how can you type "26 today"? If you know he turned 26 today, you also know which year he was born, and you can type that.

If you DON'T know how old he turned (so, how close friends are you if you go to his borthday and yet doesn't pick up how old he turns? :) then you just type "today", and the date will be 2005-10-12 and it will be placed in iCal for that day every year.

Address book can't help you find out what year your friends were born you know. :)

My main issue with the Address Book/iCal integration is that the events in iCal are uneditable!

What I've had to do is manually re-create all my birthday entries in iCal, because I like to have iCal automagically shoot me an email 10 days prior to the event (to make extra extra sure so I don't forget the *important* ones). I'd love to be able to set events for the birthday calendar that iCal generates from my address book entries, because that would be so slick.

You may wish to check out Milestone Reminder - http://www.micheldalal.com/sw/macosx/br/.
It will support all dates in your addressbook (not just birthdays) and you can specify reminder type and when the reminder occurs. And because it's just another iCal entry, you can edit the ones you want to change the reminder for manually.

I'm not associated with the product other than being a happy customer.
