Play Ogg Vorbis files in iTunes 5 / QuickTime 7 Apps
Install Arek's OggVorbis QuickTime component, and you can listen to Ogg Vorbis files in QuickTime 7. Tested with QuickTime 7.0.2 and iTunes 5.0.1 on OS X 10.4.2.

[robg adds: Back in 2002, this hint covered another Ogg Vorbis plug-in. In checking their project page, though, it was last updated in May of 2004, and only claims compatibility with QuickTime 6.0.2. I have not tested this one...]

December 2005 Addendum: The new URL for this project is:

http://www.xiph.org/quicktime/

The old one above will no longer work...

The older plugin, available at SourceForge, does not work with QuickTime 7 and/or Mac OS X Tiger; it makes QuickTime Player and iTunes "exit unexpectedly" as soon as they attempt to open an Ogg Vorbis file. I'd recently been trying unsuccessfully to fix it; kudos to Arek Korbik for coming up with a working alternative!

Works well here. CPU utilization seems a bit high, but better than nothing! Thanks for the hint.

It works here, but all I get is flat sounding mono with itunes whereas the same file using vlc sounds full in stereo. Other formats in itunes sound good. (Using optical out on a revolution card.)

It brought back the ability to Export as OGG in Quicktime (I've got QT Pro) as well, like the old component. I haven't actually tried it yet, but if it's like the old one, it'll be slow.

Basic workings ok, qt plugin + "open url…" not
Authored by: PopMcGee on Oct 10, '05 11:45:33AM

Worked, but when clicking an ".ogg" file in safari, it is downloaded to the disk instead of playing directly in the browser, as with mp3 files and the quicktime plugin (example here: http://www.songbirdofswing.com/the_songs/Glory/ ). Additionally, the "open url…" command in quicktime player won't load ogg files over the internet. Good start, but don't stop now, please.

iTunes visualizer broken, too
Authored by: PopMcGee on Oct 10, '05 11:51:17AM

Just found out that iTunes won't show moving bars in the visualizer with ogg files, too bad.

http://www.xiph.org/quicktime/ is now the permanent home of the QuickTime 7 Ogg Vorbis component. Allows iTunes and any other QuickTime compatible application to use various formats like Vorbis.
