10.4: Avoid Spotlight issues when adding Classic Classic
Tiger only hintHere's a little heads-up concerning Classic. Do not move an OS 9.2.2 System folder from another computer to a 10.4 Mac. This will confuse Spotlight (it will crash trying to index the other non-extistent computer). Also, in the Advanced section of the Classic preferences panel, check the 'Use Mac OS 9 preferences from your home folder' box. Install a new System folder from an OS 9.2.2 install disk, and you'll be good to go.

[robg adds: I can't confirm this glitch, as I no longer have Classic installed on any of my machines. If someone can confirm or deny, I'd appreciate it.]

migrating w/ assistant works

I migrated a user account and everything to an ibook w/ 10.4.2 (new w/o classic). After renaming the (from old computer) folders at the root level of the volume I launched classic. Not a problem the System Folder transferred fine. I clicked on spotlight and let it index and it completed. Yes, both of these machines were at the same OS revision and the names were identical because I used the migration assistant from tiger (as was the username and UID). I didn't have a problem as is documented in this tip, but if it occurs I would look to the computer name first and also rebuild the classic desktop.

I've added 10.4 to six of our computers since Tiger came out, and although I did an install from the Tiger disk, no System 9 was installed for me. So I copied the System Folder from the hard drive backup I made before wiping and installing, and then did that weird System Folder blessing ritual so it would be recognized, and on all of the computers Classic works fine. I just tried using Spotlight to look for "Apple Audio Extension", and it dutifully showed that file from the Extensions folder with the System Folder.

Not sure if this is what the article mentions as "installing System 9 from another computer", but it seems to be working here. Computers involved were a clamshell iBook G3 333, iBook G3 500, iBook G3 700, iMac DV 450, PowerBook G4 867, and PowerBook G4 1.67.

I wish I could test this out but ever since upgrading to Tiger, my Classic installation has ceased to function. I've tried every "fix" on Apple's website plus every one I found on the Internet. The Mac OS 9.2 splash window comes up and the progress meter never updates. Starting Classic would be nice because my HP scanner (4400c) is not supported under OS X or any 3rd-party vendor driver for that matter.

I've tried reinstalling but the results are always the same. Strange...

Do you have the DivX plugin installed in OS X (look in /Library/QuickTime or ~/Library/QuickTime folders)? Try removing it manually or using the installer to uninstall it (recommended). There's a beta of the new DivX 6 plugin in the DivX Labs site the fixes various issues related to Tiger.

Cheers

Call or email HP and they'll send you a new scanner compatible w/OS X. I got a new 4070 w/built-in transparency unit, all for free if you send yr old 4400c back. Sweet! Sure beats mucking around reinstalling classic. No joke, it's cause they claimed they'd release OS X drivers for the 4400c, but then the engineers couldn't follow through.

I "installed" Classic by copying it over a wireless network, iBook running Panther -> Dual G5 running Tiger. Mounted the iBook's hard drive and just dragged it over. The copy was slow, but I didn't run into any "Spotlight issues". Classic works fine.

Actually, it's possible that the Classic System Folder in the iBook got there by being copied from my ancient B&W G3, but that was pre-Tiger, so not relevant to the Spotlight thing. Still, I'm pretty doubtful about the need for this hint.
