New server online... Site News
After a hectic day (thanks James and Sean!), I'm pleased to be able to say "Welcome to the new Mac OS X Hints server!" With any luck, the new server will be just like the old one, but faster.

In the event it's not, however, please just drop me an email explaining what's not working, and we'll do our best to get it taken care of ASAP. My email address is robg at macosxhints dot com. And for those of you who notice such things, the server is now hosted in the Pacific time zone, so you'll notice a differene in the time of the posts starting Monday.

And once again, thanks to Sean at Macworld and James at Out of Control Image for all the hard work that made this migration possible today!

9:30pm Update: We had some issues with posting and searching on the forums, but it seems those have been resolved now...

Well, keep in mind that there aren't a lot of people here yet :). But yea, it's got faster CPUs and a ton more RAM, so that can't hurt!

Thanks Rob, James, and Sean! Browsing speed on my old iBook G3 is dramatically faster right now.

It's noticeably faster, excellent and good work. My only complaint is the 122 new articles waiting for me via the RSS feed, but that's no longer an issue. It seems each one was duplicated 4 times, even the ones I've already read.

On a related matter, throughout the day I might get notification that there are new posts on the site when I had already read the day's hints. I don't know what causes this, but Safari RSS seems to do it for a few sites (namely Mac OS X Hints' and the Smoking Gun's feeds). Anyone know what the deal is?

macosxhints might update the modified time on the article when a new comment is posted, which could cause your RSS reader to mark an article as unread every time a comment is added. Just a guess, I haven't actually checked this out.

The server's timezone change might be the reason for the duplicates.

Ya know, the way that's worded it sounds like it was a hectic day because of James and Sean. Or, was it supposed to sound that way?

Technically it was a tough day because of Rita. The old server was located in Houston...

PROBLEM
Authored by: mistersquid on Sep 24, '05 11:24:45AM
I'm sorry, but there has been a violation of Mac OS protocol. The server is most definitely not "faster." It is, instead, snappier! Thanks for your attention to this important point.

What was the old server? What're the specs on the new server? Any changes in the software?

Those of us that run servers (especially those of us who run Macintosh servers) are certainly curious.

Last time I asked, I was surprised to learn that OS X Hints is not hosted on a Mac--as you might expect. Instead, due to hosting costs, it was being hosted on some Pentiums.

That might have changed due to the move.

According to netcraft.com, as of Sept. 24 2005, www.macosxhints.com is hosted on an Intel box running Apache on Red Had Linux. No Macs here...(at least not yet).
