Move the Mail.app Send button out of harm's way Apps
This is a pretty simple hint, but I got bit by it a couple of times before I realized it could be fixed...

Ever notice how near the little red Close bubble is right next to the Send button in the Mail.app message composition window? Ever written something you absolutely regretted writing, and decided to flush it by closing the window ... and hit the Send button instead, because it's so close?

If this hasn't happened to you yet, it will; trust me. But there's a very simple solution: go to View -> Customize Toolbar and drag two or three Spaces to the left of the Close button. This will give you a nice margin of error between these two very, very different buttons.

Do it now. You don't want what just happened to me to happen to you.

I don't get this hint. I can't accidentally close the window without seeing a confirmation sheet.

It's the other way around...

Imagine typing the name of a very good friend into the "To:" field, then typing away stupid stuff. You're now only 1 click away from a catastrophy, as sending is immediate and doesn't ask you for a confirmation. So you try to close the message, miss the button and - boom! - the your friend hates you.

Command-Shift-D will send your message, Command-W will close your window.

About 10 times as fast as mousing around and no possible mixups...

I've never accidentally sent an email I was trying to close. But, I have accidentally pressed the send key combo on unfinished emails. To prevent this from happening again I've made it a habit to never populate the To: CC: or BCC: fields until I'm finished composing and ready to send.

Good suggestion for new messages but inconvenient for replies and their prepopulated recipient fields.

I didn't know that any one used the button to close windows any more. I always use command-w. Especially useful in Safari where you can accidentally close a window instead of a tab.

For those who like the "Send" button, an alternative would be to add a flexible space to the left of the existing buttons, thereby forcing all the buttons over to the right side of the toolbar.

strangely enough, you have to do this for both the "Send" and "Reply" windows! (One or the other of these fixes the "Forward" window, though, so at least you don't have to do it 3 times :-)

Macosxhints has been suffering from a bit of hint deflation recently (the best ones are taken!), but this is excellent. A predictive hint that would be no good after the fact. Great!

I've encountered the same problem; accidentally sending an email which should have been closed.

The solution I nowadays use is to alway first type the message text, and when totally happy, type the To: address afterwards and then send. This also prevents accidental sending by hitting the wrong key combo.

Of course it does not work when replying, because in that case the To: address is already filled in.

Helix and I already posted about your solution, but the reminder can't hurt. :-)
