Install the latest Flash player for a speed increase Web Browsers
With only a simple download of the Flash 8 player from Macromedia, any site using Flash will load many times faster. For example, use Safari to load cnet.com to check the speed difference.

[robg adds: I don't normally run 'new version out' notes as hints here, but after playing with Flash Player 8 (which looks like it's been available since early September), I decided to make an exception in this case. I've always been somewhat disappointed with the speed of Flash on the Mac -- animations were jerky, scrolling wasn't smooth, etc. However, this version seems to have answered my complaints, and the speed now feels quite comparable to Flash on the PC. My favorite test site (and time-waster site!) is this mini putt game, which really used to drag badly when scrolling between holes. With the new Flash player, that lag is now gone, and I even noticed smoother animation of something as simple as the rolling ball.]

The Macromedia Flash Player 8 can be downloaded from the link below. The "download" button brought me to a Mac OS X option.

Crash from Flash install
Authored by: kmaz on Sep 23, '05 07:01:12PM

I don't know if it is something specific for my computer or not but after installing this upgrade when going to the Apple.com web site the Safari and Firefox too both allow the computer's processor to be taken over by something. I'm guessing that it is something to do with the Flash. After a while you either have to shutdown or you get the Multi-Language Crash (sorry I don't know the correct term folks) and you are forced to do so. Again, I'm not very savy as to why this is happening but when I removed these newly installed files from the Internet Plug-Ins Folder and restarted the problems stopped. Ideas??

Flash got the speed boost because Macromedia finally caught on to using OpenGL for the Mac instead of Software rendering. Took them bloody long enough to figure it out that OpenGL would mean performance increases.

OmniWeb Users Beware!
Authored by: PanicRoom on Sep 21, '05 11:56:56AM
A heads up for omniweb 5 users (all 3 of us):
Flash 8 is incompatible with OmniWeb 5.
After downloading Flash 8, no flash content will load at all in OW5. Not only will OW5 not play web based flash content, even locally saved .swf files refuse to load in omniweb. Omni's support page lists the Flash 8 BETA as incompatible, but it obviously applies to the currently shipping version (8,0,22,0) as well (wish I knew before I installed).
BTW, the installer screws up permissions. Hope this helps other OW5 users.

The 5.1.2 beta1 that was just release adds supports for the new flash. You can grab it here:

Wow!! Made a huge difference in Safari on my 1Ghz Al PowerBook. I had been switching to FireFox when I went to sites like newegg.com, because it seemed like all the flash would bring Safari to it's knees.

Flash security settings
Authored by: mclbruce on Sep 21, '05 12:05:24PM

After installing the Flash player it's a good idea to look over your security settings.
http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager.html
In particular Flash has it's own version of "cookies" that is turned on by default I believe.

Repair permissions as well.
Authored by: Anonymous on Sep 23, '05 11:15:02AM

Get Disk Utility to repair your permissions as well. Lots of instances of files that should have owner 0 but actually owned by the user that installed them (usually 501 for a single-user machine), and
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/flashplayer.xpt
has
-rw-r--r--
when it should be
-rw-rw-r--
.

With the number and pure annoyingness of Flash ads, hopefully this will make Safari's speed almost respectable.

After installing Flash player 8 scrolling in Safari became very jerky what again I found most anoying. Firefox was ok. For some reason I prefer to use Safari, so the only solution was to uninstall it and reinstall version 7.

I am using Tiger with all of the latest updates running on a 1.25 Ghz Mirrored doors PowerMac.

The flash content seems to scroll up the screen at a different rate to the html content too. Very odd, but when it's just sat there it's much better than before speed wise and fan noise wise so I'll keep it.

I think the mini-putt game deserves a bit more hype. (Maybe a hint all its own.) Holy crud, is it addictive.

I was thinking to myself, "yeah, right", seeing that. But it's pretty easy after all. My first game I just fooled around and got the idea, but my second game I paid attention and got 11 under par. 6 hole in ones. Wait, it's still up in another tab, I'll get details to bore everyone.... :-)

3 bogeys (1 over)
4 pars
8 birdies (1 under)
3 eagles (2 under)

So, the bottom line is I believe you. (grin)

An even better way to speed up Flash-heavy pages...
Authored by: gidds on Sep 21, '05 04:17:20PM

...is to run Firefox, and install the Flashblock plug-in. That way, stupid animations and irritating moving adverts won't even load!

(Unless you click on them. So you don't miss anything you don't want to.)

And PithHelmet for Safari. The latest version (2.6.1) has a command to toggle blocking of all plugins if you want to stop 'em after they're already loaded.

Not only does it make it faster, but a heck of a lot faster than before. It also makes it faster than my PC. I have a dual Dell 2.66GHz Xeon, and my little 1.67GHz G4 powerbook loads faster than my firefox on PC. This tip rocks.

Just putt through one of the "vents" on the side.
The ruff on the final hole way kept me from making par.

My best score: 21 !!

negligible difference
Authored by: nodmonkey on Sep 22, '05 03:25:04AM

Maybe it's because I'm still using a G3 600MHz iBook, but flash animations still chug along choppy here, the plugin didn't apparently change anything. I was all excited about smoothness, too.

Omni users, get latest and install flash
Authored by: Ilgaz on Sep 22, '05 08:46:35AM

I think most of the people not updating that CPU killer are omniweb users.

Omni group "fixed" flash 8 incompatability in latest release.

Grab it from versiontracker on Omnigroup.

Note its not only for flash, they fixed most of crashers.

Install the latest Flash player for a speed increase

I did a test before i upgraded from Flashplayer7.
Testet on a G5 Dual 2.5 GHz, iMac 20" 2GHz and a PB 1.25 GHz.

There's no differense in speed what so ever! If you use bitmapcashing (flashplayer8 only) it sure works more smooth, but there is no increas at all in pure old speed.

The new Flash player brings the Mac on par with the PC for now.

Try entering this URL in Safari on a modern Mac running 10.2 or higher:

http://www.everflash.com/flash/choppytest.html

Now do the same on any modern PC running Windows NT/2000/XP in Internet Explorer..

Funny how a 2.8 GHz Dell tore up the bar on this test and a simple iMac G4 running at 800 MHz doesn't..
