Remove the 'Corporate' tab from Messenger 5.0 Apps
One of the new Microsoft Messenger 5.0 features is the ability to communicate through Microsoft Communications Server 2005 for corporate chatting. Most people using Messenger have no need of this feature, and removing the annoying "Corporate" tab at the top of the Contact List isn't allowed without some hacking.

Thankfully, a simple modification to Messenger's interface removes the tab. In this thread in the Neowin forums, Timothy (second post) provides a modified ContactWindow.pobj file that removes the useless tab. Download the file, and then replace the existing ContactWindow.pobj file. To do that, make sure Messenger isn't running, then control-click the application and choose Show Package Contents. Navigate into Contents -> Resources, and you'll find the original version of ContactWindow.pobj. Drag it somewhere safe as a backup, and put the modified file in its place.

Launch Messenger again, and the corporate tab will have been vanquished.

[robg adds: I tested this one, and it works as described (and the window definitely looks better without any tabs).]

Make sure you haven't selected the Corporate tab!

Of course, when I saw this post, I immediately went and started Messenger to have a look at the corporate tab which I have so carefully ignored. Seeing that I would never use it, I quit Messenger and replaced the file as mentioned in the hint. However, when I restarted Messenger, I no longer had two tabs (which was right), but the contents visible were the corporate contents.

So, if you want to apply this tab, make sure you have selected the personal tab before quitting Messenger.

If you do make the same mistake as me, just download MSN Messenger 5.0 again and reapply the new file, but after having reopened Messenger and having selected the Personal tab.

Before changing any files found in an Application Package, you should always make a back-up of the file. Most Application Package files, (All that I have come across), will happily ignore a new folder in the package. Whenever I change any Package files, I create a "backup" folder inside the package and copy unchanged versions of the file I am changing. If anything goes wrong I can just copy the backup back into the root level of the package.

Well where i live, in Canada, there simply isn't anyone using anything else than MSN, so you have no choice. AOL, ICQ, whatever, no one even knows what that is.

And Adium and all those other ones are full of features i don't find usefull, like the ability to connect to other IM networks, and i actually think that MSN 5 is the leanest one, as weird as that sounds...

even the 'official' MSN Messenger for the mac doesn't support all the "MSN"
features, like custom emotions to name just one, then you've got the whiteboard
etc!

Microsoft has ripped us off AGAIN
