10.4: Run a quick search by email address in Mail Apps
Tiger only hintThis may be an obvious one, but I was searching through some folders I had imported into Mail when I moved from PC to Mac, and wanted to search for a person who had sent me email. Now, you can turn on the organise by thread function (View -> Organise By Thread), but that only organises by subject line.

If you want to find all the messages in your Mail app from a specific person across many different subjects, and dont want the pasky trouble of typing a name (which could bring up funny results) or finding an email address from Address Book, here's a shortcut. Simply find any one email from the contact you wish to isolate, then click and hold on the name/address pair in the From or CC header, and literally drag it into the search area, and there you have it, instant search.

[robg adds: The nice part about this trick is that Mail runs the search as soon as you drop the email address. Also, while testing this one, I found an even quicker shortcut -- just drag the message itself from the "one-line" view (top pane) into the search box; Mail automatically puts the email address in the search field.]

Alternatively, set up a smart mailbox. Click on a messag from the person you want to group, choose "New Smart Mailbox..." from the Mailbox menu.

The resulting dialog will already have chosen "From" as the criterion (you can add more criteria, just as with rules) and have filled in the address for you. The dialog is very similar to the criteria portion of the Rules dialog.

Click OK, and you will have a smart mailbox containing all of the messages that meet the criteria.

If i am reading this hint correctly, then there is an even easier way (at least in Panther) select the message as told to in the original hint, then just select "From" in the search pop-up. Mail will automatically populate the search with the full name of the sender. Then type return.
This works for the other choices in the pop-up as well.

It appears that this search pop-up has vanished in Tiger. This means that if I want to find all mails with "@" in their subject or a word which occurs in most mails, I'm simply scr**ed. It seems like the only way to do this, is by making a smart mailbox, but then I can't see in which mailboxes the found messages are. And I really don't want to make a smart mailbox everytime I want to do a quick search. Does anyone have a solution for this?

OK, never mind, I finally discovered the extra bar of buttons after performing a search, which allow to limit the search to only a specific mailbox or header field... 8-)
