10.4: Another warning on Address Book data loss Apps
Tiger only hintHere's an important warning about Address Book and iSync: Make sure there's no pairing between Adress Book and your phone when you perform synchronization using iSync thru Bluetooth for Symbian OS mobile phones.

I use my phone to send SMS with my PowerBook paired via Bluetooth with my mobile (turn on both Mac and mobile Bluetooth, pair them, launch Address Book, click the Bluetooth icon button on the Address Book; then you can click on any mobile phone number at Address Book to send SMS and dial from Mac).

But one day, I forgot to disconnect from Address Book and then performed a data sync using iSync. After it was complete, all my records were gone! Luckily, I did backup regulary.

[robg adds: A previous hint covered Address Book data loss when syncing and modifying contacts. As always, these incidents point to the importance of good, recent backups. Even if you don't back up all your data files, at least use Address Book's own File: Back up Address Book menu item to copy your contacts to a safe place every so often.]

In addition to Rob's additions, please also keep filing bugs at bugreport.apple.com, so that these bugs can get fixed and we don't have to keep thinking about them.

I don't see how this is a bug. It asks which devices you want to take precedence. It has to add the device as a new syncing device. This is a reasonable warning but I see no reason for the report of bugs regarding this to apple unless i am missing some other issue which caused the deletion of data.

I've seen a few losses from Address Book recently. One randomly and one when the drive ran out of space. Address Books seems to make a 'prior' version of it's data file. Is there any way to restore from that? (If not, then why is it there since it doesn't seem to help?). Swapping it in doesn't seem to work. Without a backup, is there any way to fix address book or restore to previous version?

i think you merely remove the ".previous" and the old data should be accessed
