10.4: Create link email messages in Safari via URL Web Browsers
Tiger only hintOK, so this is small but kind of neat. If you enter the URL mail-link: in Safari's address bar, it will tell your default mail client to create a new message with a link to the current page -- just the same as selecting File: Mail Link to This Page. You could put these links on your website for Safari users, or make bookmarks from them...

I'd like to find a list of all other links of this type...

running strings /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari includes these strings in a row:

  • network-diagnostics: requires a hostname; for example: network-diagnostics://localhost. passing localhost, however, stalled out the Network Diagnostics window for me — I'll leave figuring out a value that works as an exercise for the reader.
  • open-help-anchor: unknown, but probably related to Help Viewer (help books are HTML, and Help Viewer uses WebKit; I don't know why this appears in Safari itself).
  • white-list: unknown.
  • go-back: provide a number n as the hostname. Safari will go back n pages. sadly, there is no go-forward.
  • mail-link: for a description of this, scroll up.
  • itms: the scheme for the links you get from iTunes Music Store. if you change http: to itms:, the link will open iTMS directly rather than going to Safari. when you open one of the http: links, a JavaScript translates it to itms: and opens that.
  • webcal: ‘webcal:' followed by anything will open iCal to the Subscribe sheet, with the complete URL filled in already, waiting for you to just click OK.

BTW: There's a question mark icon linked to "open-help-anchor:ibrw1071" in Safari's "Failed to open page" -page.

this is different but sort of along the same lines. I have a bookmarklet on my computer at work that I can click. When I click it, it creates a mail message to my home e-mail account with a link to the current page in the browser window and the title of the webpage as the e-mail subject.

javascript:location.href='mailto:youraddress@domain.com?SUBJECT='+document.title+%20'&BODY='+escape(location.href)

It works in any borwser that supports bookmarklets (including safari, firefox/mozilla and others). I have it installed on my bookmarks toolbar for easy/fast access.

if you want to check it out, just change the e-mail address part. search google for how to create a bookmarklet if you don't know how.

Oh cool, I can create a link to that in the bookmarks bar!
So I can call the link "Mail this page" and set the bookmark address to mail-link: and then just click on it to mail the page instantly.

!horizontal scrollbars!
Authored by: nick on Aug 09, '05 12:26:54PM

please don't missunderstand me: i like macosxhints and i don't care wether the site is financed by ads, sponsors, the government or the church. but perhaps the introduction of the big-ads would have been the right time to think about how to prevent horizontal scrollbars, even if people enter some lines of code. at the moment about 100 characters are enough to burst the screenwidth of a 12'' powerbook running safari. this is UGLY!

regards, niko.

Cmd-shift-I and mail-link: create for me a html-formatted message*, and the bookmarklet a new plain text message window (using Mail 2.0.5).

*You can hit Cmd-shift-T then to change e-mail format to plain text.

Instead of typing "mail-link:", you can use a key command:
APPLE+SHIFT+i
