Install TomTom Navigator 5 on Palm from the Mac Install
I received my copy of TomTom 5 yesterday and was happily amazed to see a Mac installation application on the CD. However, my joy was shortlived as the installation didn't work. So, for those of you trying to install TomTom 5 using the Mac installer on a Palm device (mine is a Tungsten T3), here is my experience.

As I said, I couldn't get it to work -- the installer placed the .cab files in the right place, but when I performed a Hotsync operation, the files would not get installed onto my Palm.

Refusing to use Virtual PC to perform the installation, I searched the net and found out that the Mac installer installs a Hotsync Conduit designed for Windows on my beloved Mac. Luckily, there is a Mac version available [92KB download]. I have no idea if this is provided by TomTom themselves (the URL is clearly not theirs), or if the kind and knowledgeable Frenchman mentioned here wrote it himself. Either way, once I installed this in /Library/Application Support/Palm Hotsync/Conduits, everything worked like a charm.

Hi, I'm Jean-Jacques Ardoino, the "frenchman" you talk about and I'll give some explain... The Mac Conduit I gave to download is really made by TomTom. A friend of mine bought the upgrade 5 and had the problem : Mac Installer installs a Conduit for Windows.
This friend is Philippe Brodu and was manager of Emagic France when Logic was under Emagic. He's using TomTom NAVIGATOR on a Tungsten T3.
He tried to phone to TomTom France and couldn't get no infos, and he finally could talk to someone at TomTom US who admitted the mistake and sent him the Mac Conduit by mail.
So I wrote the news in my pages (GraffitiX) and I kept the Conduit as a link on the old URL of GraffitiX. So it's easier to find for the users until TomTom will repair the bug.

The version that shipped on the CDs is wrong. This from TomTom support.

From the Finder:

1. Select the Mac HD
2. Library
3. Application Support
4. Palm HS
5. Conduits

In the Conduits folder, delete the TomTom Conduit that was installed by the Navigator 5 CD. After you delete the conduit, run the Mac installer. Please note: Make sure there is no TomTom CD in the CD drive. Insert Navigator 5 setup CD when the Mac Installer prompts you to do so. After you delete this folder, please visit the link below to download the MAC installer.

Install TomTom Navigator 5 on Palm from the Mac

I learned that the right Mac conduit is hidden in the setup package. If you control click the latest setup app that you can download from tomtom.com/3427 choose "show package contents" or something like that. (My machine is running in dutch so I'm not for sure) and voila, the Mac conduit is there. Replace it in the conduitfolder all systems are go! I hope it helps you guys and I'm sorry if my English is not what it is suppost to be because I'm dutch. If all this is too difficult just send me an email and I will mail you the conduit. (wilmar.dejong@quicknet.nl) Cheers, Wilmar

As Wilmar says.. if you ctrl click on the set up in the new download from TomTom you can then view the package contents... and inside is the conduit. But now when i click hot sync it opens the hot sync software setup. I had to hot sync manually to get it to work whilst keeping the TomTom installer open

I've been there and I feel your pain. Here's how to set it up:

http://homepage.mac.com/selgart/tomtom/intro.html

I spent two entire maddening evenings getting it up and running (twice) and it wasn't easy. Well, that's not true. It -is- easy but the instructions are either missing or incorrect.

Hope this helps.

I finally got selgart's instructions to work for me, but only after some very frustrating hours of trying. Installing the Navigator software went smoothly. But installing the maps onto an SD card as he describes only works if you run the TomTom Setup program [em]all by itself[/em] with no CDs [em]or disk images[/em] mounted. If any of the disks are mounted (either in CD or DMG form), the only option that appears is to install the application itself, not the maps.

If no disks are mounted when you start TomTom Setup, you can then insert a map disk and will be allowed to install maps to the SD card.

Quite a mess . . . but now that the maps are installed it is exceedingly cool.

Install TomTom Navigator 5 on Palm from the Mac
Authored by: iAnnaOb on Nov 18, '06 10:27:24AM

Hello to everybody,
I really need to say that this TomTom Conduit was very useful. This way I instaled with no single problem TomTom Navigator 5 on Palm TX from my Mac.

The problem started when I wanted to instal maps on the TX.
Everything works but... when I try to iSync it or HotSync it I receive the following info:

"Error al instalar .cab en la Tarjeta SecureDigital (SD)
No hay ninguna aplicación en el handheld que pueda abrir estos archivos. Si ha instalado recientemente una aplicación de este tipo, ejecútela y realice a continuación la operación HotSync."

Which means that "there is an error while .cab instalation on SD. There is no aplication on my handheld which can open those files. If you have install recently this type aplication, execute and use your HotSync."

So I am really confused, because I have on my Palm a tomtom now. And on my card file Contacts Navigation File, but there is no way to install the maps.

DO you have any idea what should I do?
Thank you
Anna
