Quickly clear tabs in Safari Web Browsers
This is kind of a no-brainer hint, but I used Safari for a long time before figuring it out. If you want a psuedo button to clear all open tabs in Safari, create a folder in the Bookmarks bar and add a single Web site (like your preferred homepage), then select the Auto-Click box (in Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks), and name it something you like (I use "Clr"). Then you can click that bookmark in the Bookmarks Bar to clear all tabs and open the single designated page.

I find this especially useful with Taboo installed. Though I like Taboo's functionality -- I've accidentally closed windows with multiple tabs more than a few times in the past -- I don't necessarily like clicking through the dialogue box every time I intentionally want to close a window with multiple open tabs. Now I just hit my Clr bookmark before I close the window, or I use it just to clear all tabs and go back to my homepage.

If your goal is to close a bunch of tabs and keep just one, just option-click the 'x' on the tab you want to keep,...works for me,...

I submitted the hint. The goal isn't necessarily to close all tabs and keep just one, it's to close all tabs as quickly and easily as possible. I use my PowerBook as my main computer, and lots of times I'm not sitting in a "proper" typing position while I surf -- I might be lying on the couch with the 'Book on the coffee table, or some such (let's call it trackpad surfing). In those instances, I don't want to have to reach for the keyboard to close the tabs. I also know quite a few people who pretty much only use the mouse and don't use keyboard shortcuts at all. And as mentioned in the hint, it's handy with Taboo installed. As well, if you're wanting to quickly get back to your homepage, you still have to type in the address or hit the home button after option-clicking to close the tabs. So, be it laziness or efficiency, one click of the mouse is easier than a click using the mouse and the keyboard, especially if you're not positioned to use the keyboard.

If you want to close all tabs, just close the window!

Clicking on Safari icon again gives you a nice new one back.

If you're concerned about reaching for keyboard, right-click on a tab and choose close others.

If you can't be bothered to use the mouse or keyboard, configure speech to recognise menu bar and just say "close other tabs".

So many ways...

ah, but then there's Taboo -- if I click to close the window, then I have to click through Taboo's dialogue box, unless I shift-click on it, but I'm not always in typing position. And it's still easier to hit the Clr bookmark to empty the tabs than it is to close the window and click again to open a new one, with or without Taboo. One click, no modifiers, tabs clear.

To close all tabs except the current one: OPT+CMD+W.

To close all tabs in the current window, closing the window in the process: SHIFT+CMD+W.

Shift-clicking the close button bypasses Taboo's warning.

Is there a similar trick to get rid of all Safari Windows except the one you're looking at?

command-option-w or control-click the tab and choose "close other tabs" or option-click the (x) button on the said tab.

Is it possible to keep from closing the window if multiple tabs are open? I hate accidently closing it when I forget that I had other tabs that I was looking at.

I always use cmd-W to close Safari windows so at most I might accidentally close a single tab within one instead of a window full of them. In other words, never use the red gumdrop button to close Safari windows. :-)
