Send Google text messages with Safari Web Browsers
Google recently released a Firefox extension called Google Send to Phone that lets you send text messages (SMS) from a website to a mobile phone. It's very well done, and it's useful to send little notes or snippets to your phone, or a friend's phone -- but I generally use Safari for most of my browsing.

However, I just realized that the extension just opens a URL and pastes text into it; one can easily open that page URL in any browser, and paste any text you wish into it:

http://toolbar.google.com/send/sms/index.php

Enjoy!

[robg adds: Google seems to be having a little bit of server trouble this morning; I tried both Safari and Firefox (via the plug-in) and only saw "Server error - try again in 30 seconds" each time I tried to send a message. Still, it seems it should work just fine from Safari once the server starts behaving again...]

Nice idea but it's infinitely easier for me to do this with iChat.

1. Click the little "+" symbol in the bottom right of iChat.
2. For the screen name enter the destination phone number in this format "18005551212".
3. Click ok.
4. Send a message to that user.

Does this work for everyone else? I've tried adding a buddy in this format in iChat and in Adium (my IM client of choice), and neither one will allow it... am I doing something wrong? Do I need a newer version of iChat? I'm running v2.1 on Panther.

What plus on the bottom right? I just see one on the bottom left.

And do you enter it as an AIM buddy or .Mac buddy?

I tried it (clicking on left +) and entering it as an AIM account number, and it gave me an error.

Please tell us every single thing you have to do in order.

To be clear, this is not a feature of iChat, but a feature of the AIM network. In other words, you're not limited to iChat; you can do this with quality IM clients like Adium.

Nice- I hope they start including SMS sending features in their other services like Gmail. Someone can probably make a greasemonkey script to do that actually...

Playing with the querystring
Authored by: Lectrick on Aug 05, '05 11:00:18AM
http://sms.toolbar.google.com/send/sms?client=unknown&numsms=1234567890&carriersms=TMOBILE&msgsms=test&sendsms=Send+message

That's the URL it fires off.

You could easily stick this into a Sogudi shortcut that takes a parameter, after which you could theoretically do cool stuff like:
sms Text to send to my phone
right from the Safari address bar.
Or make a different shortcut for your significant other like
girlfriend Can't wait to ::censored:: you later
Heck, why stop there?
mom Mom, please stop calling, I'm trying to concentrate

The site is down for me this morning also, however.

you could just use javascript and put the link in your bookmarkbar
javascript:void(q=prompt('Enter%20your%20Message:'));if(q)void(location.href='http://sms.toolbar.google.com/send/sms?client=unknown&numsms=0123456789&carriersms=MOBILE&msgsms='+escape(q)+'&sendsms=Send+message')
change the "0123456789" to the number and "MOBILE" to the carrier, you can have multiple bookmarks, name them "message wife" etc

are there any simpler ways to intergrate into the SMS network from the net for scripting, preferably without having to choose the carrier?

This really seems like the perfect candidate to become a dashbard widget. Once the google thing is work I plan to make one.

And there's another Data Mining facility coming from Google.. In a few years, Google knows everything about everyone.

If you have a problem with Google's data-mining and stuff like that then DON'T USE IT

SMS Dashboard Widget
Authored by: keaka on Aug 14, '05 10:15:08AM
fyi, I created a free widget that allows you to send SMS messages. The main advantage over Google's service is that the widget integrates with the Mac OS X Address Book, so all of your friend's mobile numbers are right there at your fingertips. It also lets your specify a return address so that you can receive replies.

Right now it allows you to send to Cingular, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon customers, and I'd be happy to try to add other carriers if requested. I'm also considering adding the option to go through Google's service (although on the backend they're probably doing the same thing I am).

An AppleScript to do the work...
Authored by: frijole on Aug 16, '05 08:29:28AM
I have created a little AppleScript application that opens up a few dialog boxes, crafts the data into a URL of the form the Google Toolbar uses for submitting SMS messages, then opens the address in a new (via JavaScript) Safari window, where it confirms that it has been sent, and then is kind enough to close it after a few seconds.

In the event the service is unavailable, the submission will bounce and Google will display an error page. This works slicker than snot on a wet rock. Too bad the eternally-craptastic SunCom isn't on the list. So I can't build it into other scripts for notifications via cell. But it's an idea.
