10.4: Keep the Trash out of Spotlight System 10.4
Tiger only hintJust in case we're not all tired of hints about Spotlight's Privacy panel, I thought I'd mention this one...

By default, Spotlight searches include items in the trash can. While this may be a feature to some ("where did I put that file? Oh yeah, it's in the trash."), it can be quite a frustration to those of us who are constantly throwing away files of the same name. You can add your trash can to Spotlight's Privacy panel to stop this behavior.

Because the folder is hidden, though, you'll need to locate it in the Finder first. Choose Go -> Go to Folder (or just hit Shift-Command-G), and type in ~/.Trash. The Trash folder will show up in a Finder window, and from there, you can drag the folder over to the open Privacy panel. Now all of your garbage will be garbage.

Just a reminder you must be in column view to add the trash otherwise if you are in the icon view or list view there is no folder you can drag over into the spotlight privacy list. Just FYI

You can drag the folder from the title of the finder window.

And this works everywhere

It's called the Proxy Icon and it allows you any drag/drop that you would apply to the original (it actually "is" the original).

For example, in any program that shows a document window, if the proxy icon is not greyed out (which would mean changes weren't saved yet), you can drag it to a location in the Finder to move or copy the file, to another app or window that may process it, etc.

For those interested, that feature is actually a subset of an old System 7 shareware (I forgot its name), that was gradually copied by the OS. The original idea was even more ambitious, as I think it first appeared in DropSave at MacHack '91 as a way to bypass navigation dialogs and save directly where you drag.

This probably won't work for those who have multiple partitions/drives, as the ~/.Trash folder (for me, at least) only gets items on the same partition. You should also add the /.Trashes folder for each disk (i.e. /.Trashes and /Volumes/Foo/.Trashes and /Volumes/Bar/.Trashes .) I think the easiest way to get them is to run "open /.Trashes", et al in the Terminal (as the go-to-folder shortcut doesn't get to them.)

Or just open the Spotlight prefs, go to Privacy, click the + button then type .Trash in the search box at the top of the dialog. Boof!

That's fine until the day that you're looking for something, tearing your hair out because you can't find it, and forget that you've added the Trash to the Privacy list. Do you have that many files in the Trash that it's a problem?

not only was the hint helpful, but I also learned how to get to folders on the drive that aren't usually visible, like /usr. thanks!

Sorry but am I missing something? I've tried searching for trash using go/go to folder and when searching using my username/.Trash I get a reply thet the folder can not be found. Also trying to locate the folder using the privacy pane for spotlight in system prefs doesn't work either? This is an admin account and repairing disk permissions had no effect....any ideas?

You should use:
~/.Trash/
/Users/yuorusername/.Trash/

NOT
/username/.Trash/

See ya

I tried using this hint but it only works for items that already in the trash when I add the .Trash folder in the privacy panel. I added the .Trash folder and tried searching in Spotlight and the files that are in the trash still show up when I search. I would really find this hint useful if I could get it to work properly. Please help!
