10.4: Sync Motorola C975 with iSync via USB System 10.4
Tiger only hintI recently bought myself a cheap prepaid Motorola C975 3G phone in the hope that it would able to sync with iSync. It's not officially supported, but some minor modifications to a couple of files on your Mac will have it synchronized with the best.

The two files to edit need special permissions to do so. If you're comfortable with the Terminal, the fastest way to do this is sudo vi filename, replacing vi with your editor of choice, of course.

Add this text to /Applications -> iSync.app [control-click and Show Package Contents] -> Contents -> PlugIns -> ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice -> Contents -> PlugIns -> PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin -> Contents -> Resources -> MetaClasses.plist. Add the text directly after the very first <dict> tag.

Now add the following text to /System -> Library -> SyncServices -> MotorolaConduit.bundle -> Contents -> Resources -> USBDevice.plist after the very first <dict> tag:
<key>C975</key>
<dict>
   <key>idProduct</key>
      <integer>12290</integer>
  <key>idVendor</key>
       <integer>8888</integer>
</dict>
Plug the phone cable in, run iSync, and "Add new device" (Command-N). With luck, the phone should show up for syncing. If not, reboot and try again. Now I just have to find a way to send Java apps to the phone by USB...

I don't have a MotorolaConduit.bundle directory anywhere onto my file system!??!

By the way, the entry to be added DOESN'T show up very well when you click on it.

I don't have a System -> Library -> SyncServices -> MotorolaConduit.bundle folder either. Does this only show up if you've already synced a Motorola phone? Is there another way to get it?

Ah, crumbs. It seems my "archive and install" install of Tiger has that MotorolaConduit.bundle but plain Tiger doesn't have it.

Apparently (from the above forum, 3rd post) Tiger only has the MetaClasses.plist so just modifying the MetaClasses.plist should work as it contains the USB device/vendor ID for the phone.

Unfortunately, because of my install of Tiger (and reluctance to do a clean install right now) I can't verify whether that will work.

Anyone care to try this on fresh Tiger minus the MotorolaConduit.bundle bit?

10.4: Motorola V975 works with OnSync but not iSync via USB
Authored by: wvdc on Aug 26, '05 01:57:11PM

I have just upgraded my iBook from Panther to Tiger, and could only modify the MetaClasses.plist. I use a Motorola V975, and I guess that can add whatever phone/model.

After a restart the phone became visible in the System Profiler, but iSync could not connect to the phone. However, OnSync did find the phone and I managed to transfer contacts.

Thanks for the tip.

I have a /System/Library/SyncServices/MotorolaConduit.bundle/ directory under OS X 10.3.7, with iSync 1.5. Of course it does me no good, since I've got a Nokia phone.

The sad part is that my Nokia 7650 doesn't work with iSync 1.5 either.

I found that I could get my phone to work with iSync1.2 (on a different mac) only.

Now if I knew how to downgrade iSync1.5 to iSync1.2, I'd be happy.

Hmm, well I have a Motorola C650, not a C975, and I got the product ID (0x4902) from System Profiler and made the appropriate modifications to MetaClasses.plist, and iSync still doesn't recognize the phone when it's plugged in. Maybe this phone just doesn't work cause it doesn't have the right interface, but shouldn't iSync still recognize it when I do "Add Device" from the product ID?

Maybe the change to the MotorolaBundle.plist is necessary.

I found that on my system the change to MotorolaBundle.plist was necessary to get the phone recognized. But, I upgraded to 10.4 from 10.3 and it seems the the MotorolaBundle.plist isn't there on 10.4

When I get my fresh new iBook I'll be able to see how things work a-proper on 'normal' 10.4

What also needs to be changed is any reference to the phone name. I don't really understand how the line with the "Copyright 2004" bit works so I don't know how important it is.
I got the C975 to sync pretty much through trial and error, but one phone isn't really a good sample size so I don't know which parts are the important ones in the plist.

Success!
I received my shiny new iBook and set about making it sync with my phone and found the following: The other comments are right, there is no MotorolaConduit.bundle directory in Tiger. (Mine was a remnant of Panther.)

Now, the good news is that this means that the "MotorolaConduit.bundle" bit can be ignored. Just add the other bit into the MetaClasses.plist file. Start iSync, connect the phone, add new device and Bam! Synchronization.

I finally got the Motorola C650 working with iSync pretty seamlessly using the instructions here:
http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.php?t=255130
although I'm not sure how their directions were really different from what I did before following the instructions here. Seems the C650 was actually supported in Panther, but I got the phone after Tiger so I never tried it back then. Well, works great now! Thanks to everyone for the help.
