Sync the Motorola A630 via iSync Apps
I finally got my Motorola A630 to work with iSync. Here's what I had to do...
 1. Quit iSync if running.
 2. In the Finder, press Command-Shift-G to get the Go to Folder window, and then enter this path: /Applications -> iSync.app -> Contents -> PlugIns -> ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice -> Contents -> PlugIns -> PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin -> Contents -> Resources. Alternatively, you can Control-click on the iSync application, choose Show Package Contents, and then open each of the above folders.
 3. In that folder, duplicate MetaClasses.plist so that you have a backup (you'll probably want to undo this process before you apply any upgrades to iSync...).
 4. Open MetaClasses.plist with TextWrangler (free from BareBones).
 5. In that file, after the opening <dict> line, insert this code.
 6. Duplicate any one of the Motorola TIFF files in that same folder and rename it MOTA630.tiff (or just use this file).
 7. Launch iSync and enjoy!
This hint worked both before and after the iSync 2.1 update (though I undid it before applying the update, then re-applied it).

So I've found another Mac/A630 user! I'd already applied that hint, so have been using iSync with the A630 for a while now. But have you had any luck using the A630 as a Bluetooth modem? I'm on T-Mobile, and haven't had any luck.

Also, here's a tip: if you take too many pictures, the bluetooth file transfer dies trying to read the directory. If you create directories (or "Categories" as Motorola calls them) and assign the pictures to them, you'll be able to access the pictures. About 5 seems to be the limit of what Blouetooth file transfer & A630 can handle.

Another way to transfer pictures is to select it and do Move > Bluetooth Link and select your computer. You can move multiple pictures this way by marking them (M key) and the Move Selected Files. You have to confirm each file but you can just press the right softkey and they'll all transfer.

A630 as BT Modem in OS X

A bit late for this but yes, it works and I use it every day. The setup is a bit lengthy, but if there is interest I will type it all out. Let me know, macosxhints at selcouth dot com

Upon following the instructions, I am still told that my A630 is not supported when attempting to add the device in iSync. Any thoughts?

Annoyingly, I just started receiving the same response, *after* I had the damn thing working. No idea what's going on. Maybe an update blew this capability away?

Sync the Motorola A630 via iSync
Authored by: azulrojas on Aug 13, '05 02:34:58PM

I am a moto a630 user with 10.3.9; I haven't upgraded yet to Tiger. I think the architecture of isync is different in 10.3, so the hint here doesn't work. There is no plugins folder in the contents of the isync app. Is there a workaround?

Any advice???? Please help.

-Sean

In this thread http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=2004031410151793 someone says they applied this hint to their a630 (in Panther).

However, note that this appears to require a USB cable. I don't think you can BlueTooth sync an a630 without Tiger. But BT cables can be had for not too much money...

Sean:

I've had similar trouble: no Plugins
directory under 10.3.9. Have you heard
anything about how to upgrade
10.3.9?

Pair the device after modifying MetaClasses.plist
Authored by: jsares on Oct 10, '05 12:54:00PM

You have to pair the device after you modify the MetaClasses.plist. It wasn't working until I deleted the device and paired it again using the Bluetooth Preference Panel. Now it's working great for me. I'm running 10.4.2.

New A630
Authored by: pedroconejo on Oct 22, '05 02:48:17AM

Hey Toe, rock on with the isync fix. Got it working a few months ago so thanks. Got a new problem, thought you or others may have an answer:

I just had my A630 replaced (the bottom row of the keyboard stopped working) but I've got an issue with the replacement - when I pair it with my computer, it shows up as a computer, not a mobile phone. Now I can't use iSync with it or other 3rd party programs like MegaCell or BluePhoneElite to manage the info. I can Pair it, but really that's all that can be done now.

Any advice on how (or if) I can somehow force the new handset to show up as a phone instead of a computer?

- Pedro

Sync the Motorola A630 via iSync
Authored by: Alfeo on Jan 20, '06 09:20:54AM

Now I am not able to complete a full sync with my A630.

Updated to 10.4.4 and I have redone to metaclass file with the updated 2.1 version. My sync will start, get the data ask about changes and conflicts then try to connect again and stall forever (until i have to cancel sync).

Can anyone help on this issue?!?

For what it's worth, this works in Mac OS X 10.4.7 with iSync 2.3. I followed the original instructions, except I inserted the code above in:
/Applications/iSync.app/Contents/PlugIns/
ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice/Contents/PlugIns/
PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin/Contents/Resources/
MetaClasses.plist
And I put the MOTA630.tiff in the same folder. Also, I added the following line:
<string>.*"MODEL=A630"</string>
to the file:
/Applications/iSync.app/Contents/PlugIns/
ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice/Contents/PlugIns/
PhoneFamilySync.phoneplugin/Contents/Resources/
MetaClasses.plist
after line 224,
<string>Motorola CDMA (?P<MODEL>[^0-9]*[0-9]*[a-zA-Z]*)</string>
