New podcast URL types allow one-click subscriptions Internet
With iTunes 4.9 and its Podcast feature, Apple also introduced two new URL types: itpc:// and pcast://. So you can subscribe, with one click, to a podcast RSS feed formatted with one of those two URL types.

I also tried this on Windows XP (under Virtual PC), but it seems not to work there.

Why did Apple create a new url scheme, and not use the feed: scheme?

Because not all RSS feeds are podcasts. You might want your podcasts to go to iTunes and your RSS feeds to go to NetNewsWire, for example.

>>> Why did Apple create a new url scheme, and not use the feed: scheme?

Falling back into their (and Microsoft's) old habits. It it was "not invented here" it is not as good as what WE can come up with. I read recently that Apple also added some new info to the RSS feed data, without discussion with the developer community who designed it in the first place.

Apple is "coming back" at least in part because they decided to make use of open standards that the community at large has already designed and standardized. If they start Microsofting us and creating their own little proprietary modifications, it will not go over well, IMHO.

Go read John Gruber's new post - in it he mentions this very problem, and gives a very good reason as to why Apple didn't solicit community feedback before implementing their extensions. And after reading this article, I happen to agree.

Any application developer can add new URL types if they want. You just have to have your application register them on the system when it runs. Chances are this works in XP if iTunes 4.9 is installed and has been run. If not it probably will be added with the next update.

You can add new schemes, which is nice but a scheme should descrive HOW a file is retrieved, not what the file is. I really don't like this idea feed:// podcast:// etc...

I also tried this with IE on XP Pro, not thru VPC, and could not get either URL types to work. IE gives "the page cannot be displayed" error message and nothing else happens.

However, links to a particular podcast within the ITMS do work with IE on XP Pro. URLs like: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=73329653

These links even start up iTunes 4.9 on the PC just like it would on a Mac and keeps you on the same URL so you do not get an error.

How/where do you find the ID number for a particular podcast?

At the podcast's "album"-style display page, grab the URL associated with the album picture - it's the link shown just above.

The problem with these phobos links is that they require the podcast to be in the ITMS. That won't do for private podcasts.

I have tried this (itps://...) on Windows XP SP1 and SP2 and it works well.

Would anyone know the ports involved here - on my local server I keep getting a server timeout when using XP (SP2 only)
