I found this over at betanews:
Apple Chapter Tool
It allows users (but not the faint of heart nor those afraid of the Terminal) to break MPEG4 AAC files into chapters. While its intent is to segment podcasts for publication/serialization, it will work with any MPEG4 AAC audio file, hopefully permitting users to rip continuous mix CDs for gapless playback (while maintaining the ability to move from track to track).
This is a Terminal application: the command line expects the name of an input file, an output file, and an XML file describing how to divide the audio. Apple provides example files that may be used as templates, but expect to get your hands a little dirty. It is considered beta, so hopefully before release it will have a UI integrated into iTunes.
Speaking of which, iTunes 4.9 is required for podcast playback. OSX 10.3.8 is the minimum OS supported; 10.4.1 is recommended. I haven't played with it yet but will try this evening when I have time. Enjoy!
[robg adds: I tried to find some more info on this tool on Apple's site, but the best I could do was a link on the GarageBand Support page -- which links directly to a disk image download from a Mac.com page.]
