Jump to the top and bottom of Mail's message list Apps
I've tried since Jaguar to find proper keyboard navigation for Mail.app's message list, specifically getting to the top and bottom of the list. In Panther, I found Mail Type Select a big help, allowing me to type a couple of letters to find a message. And usually, when I typed "a," Mail would take me to the top of the list. But I can't get Mail Type Select to work consistently with Tiger Mail, so I've been limping along, until just now...

In the Mail message list, hold down the Option key, and then also hold the up or down arrow keys for more than a second, and there ya go: top or bottom of the list. It's a very weird interface detail; I don't know of any other Apple app that requires a key held down for a period of time before it does its thing. But at least it works. (I don't know if it works in Panther Mail.)

P.S. I'd love to see something like Type Select back in Mail, or if someone can suggest how to get the bundle to work again, I'd appreciate it...

Interesting. I've also found that if you have multiple messages from/to the same person in that mailbox and you hold down option and just tap up and down, it'll scroll through all the messages that are related (for me, highlighted blue). Thanks.

Actually, it seems to scroll through all the messages in the
same thread (same subject, modulo "Re:").

I've always been frustrated by "user friendly" Apple's failure to provide proper use of the Home and End keys in Mail in Panther, to get to the beginning or end of a mail list. Now you're telling me they still haven't fixed this in Tiger. Great.

I, too, am frustrated by the uselessness of the Home and End keys. I wish they'd settle on a standard meaning for each, and then implement it. I don't care much if Home takes me to the beginning of a line [which I'd prefer], or to the top of the page ... I just want those keys to be put to use in a way that would save me some movement [hence, time].

THIS IS THE BEST HINT EVER. I've been looking for / waiting for / wishing for this keyboard shortcut for ages.

THANK YOU!

When I first press the combination in Tiger, I do also get the beep. Holding the arrow down will move to the top or bottom.

I can live with the beep - been annoyed there wasn't a quick, keyboard way to jump to the top or bottom!

Reason for the beep
Authored by: jmacak on Jul 08, '05 10:52:03AM
As "welshby" noted, the option + up/down arrow key will move to the previous/next message in a thread. (This keyboard shortcut is listed in Mail's Help.)

The beep occurs when you use the keyboard shortcut and there is no previous/next message in the thread. Hence the beep serves as audible feedback for a failed command.

The use of the prolonged hold of the option + up/down arrow key to move to the top/bottom of the full list of messages (the subject of this hint) is not documented in Mail's Help.

Thanks for a great tip. The same opt-up/down arrow key combo seems to work on any open window - folder, disc, etc - containing multiple items. Experimenting a bit more, I find that highlighting a folder then opt-right arrow will open the folder and reveal nested contents; opt-left arrow closes it. Cool. Less mousing is always better on a PowerBook, I've found.

Rob
If you're reading, take away the Tiger only logo. This works in Panther as well.
