10.4: Fix a Delicious Library Dashboard widget issue Apps
Tiger only hintWhen I upgraded to Tiger, which I am still transitioning to, I did not upgrade my current drive. My install of 10.3.9 was FUBAR, to put it mildly. I installed Tiger on one of my FireWire hard drives, then used the handy Migration Assistant utility to bring all my apps, docs, and prefs to the new clean Tiger install.

There were a couple casualties, but nothing major. The move to Tiger went much smoother then the move to Panther. My biggest snag was thankfully not a production-critical one. The Delicious Library (DL) Dashboard widget introduced in version 1.5 of DL would not find anything in Library! Then I found out it was only finding new entries. After a few emails back and forth with Delicious Monster (very helpful folks; I have conversed with them in the past with great results), I found that the Library Cache was the problem. Clearing this cache fixed this problem right away, and now I can use the Library Widget, which is very useful.

Here are the steps:
  1. Delete this folder: ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Delicious Library Items.
  2. Launch and quit Library. Depending on how much you have cataloged in Library, this may take some time.
  3. Close (if open) and open the Delicious Library Dashboard Widget.
Now when you search using the Widget, it will work. Thanks to Drew Hamlin at Delicious Monster for telling me to regenerate the cache.

You didn't put the folder name in quotes, which would have highliged the problem that 'Caches' isn't spelt with two 's's.

What happened is that you ended up doing 'rm -rf ~/Library/Cashes/Delicious' as well as a 'rm -rf Library' and 'rm -rf Items'. The first wouldn't have done anything (given that the spelling is wrong) whilst the second, if run from your home directory, would have *censored*ted your Library folder, which is where all your preferences, caches, settings etc. are stored. This includes stuff like iCal calenders (Library/Calenders) and your whole Delicious Library (Library/Application Support/Delicious Monster or some such).

Moral of the story: *always* quote paths with spaces in them, especially if you don't know about escaped spaces. What's an escaped space? Use quotes all the time and you don't need to know.

"Thanks! Don't try this at home..."

Well, actually what not to try at home is using the command line if you're not conversant with command line syntax.

With an undo command and with the temporary repository of the Trash, the Finder is much more forgiving than using "rm" if you don't know exactly what you're doing.

Wow, the developer really misspelled "caches" in that path? That's too bad.

I saw a discussion on Slashdot about whether spelling and grammar were important. This path is an example of a case where spelling might be crucial, but you won't know it til it's too late. Users, who reasonably assume that a cache problem is involved with some bug, will search their Library folders for "cache", which makes perfect sense. Finding nothing for Delicious Library, their search could end right there -- because they'd never expect the programmer to still be using a path with a spelling error, especially not after it's been out long enough for users to point out the error.

Nope, you'd assume that the app used the proper spelling, upon which not only language but the very functions of the computer rely.

You're kidding, right? Not to interrupt a perfectly lengthy rant, but the poster just typoed the path name. It's just the normal default caches folder.

Nope. The _poster_ misspelled the path.

If the poster misspelled the path, then the post needs fixing. I wasn't kidding, but rather asking if the typo was really still in the app. It's a relief to know that the poster made the error. It isn't too reassuring to see that no one else bothered to point out the error.

Folks, a misspelled word or grammatically incorrect sentence is *buggy code*. If you leave this bug in, it will come back to haunt someone, later, when they try to interpret your "code".

For crying out loud. Yes I mispelled it. But I did type the word correctly elsewhere in the post. So if someone does search this site, they will indeed the Library Cache problem.

I will ask Rob to change the post the next time I see him online.

Thanks for pointing my error out, but there are better ways to do it. I think people are a little too critical and are just itching to go off on a rant and be critical of an error. You end up just looking like a jerk.

Yes, this was listed as a fix on the Delicious Library Blog. Have a look at http://www.delicious-monster.com/blog/2005/04/delicious-library-15-now-available.html and do a search of "cache" in the comments.
