10.4: Make Address Book Smart Groups auto-complete in Mail Apps
Tiger only hintMaking a group in Address Book gives you the capability in Mail.app (when composing an email) to type the name of the group in the TO:, CC:, or BCC: fields, hit Enter, and it auto-populates all the addresses from the group into your email field.

Smart groups in Address Book give you the capability to make a group that you never have to change. For example, if you have a company like "Apple" and you make a smart group consisting of anyone with "apple.com" in their email address, then no matter how you update or remove your addresses in Address Book, the group "Apple" would always be current.

But never the twain shall meet -- Smart Groups don't auto-complete in Mail.app!

I was able to get around it in a simple but possibly not obvious way. First, make a smart group with your wanted criteria. Next make a regular group whose only member is the smart group. Presto! A smart group that you can use in Mail.app, and that will also auto-complete.

This solves an other problem I was having with Mail. I can't get Smart Mailboxes to recognize Smart Groups properly. I can create the Smart Mailbox but it doesn't update.

I used this hint to create an "interim" Group in Address book and used that in my Smart Mailbox and now it works like I wanted.

This didn't work for me and I'm wondering if there is a maximum number of contacts that can be in a smart group linked to smart mailbox. For example, I can create a smart group with all the contacts from a certain domain or a certain company and then link a smart mailbox to members of that group and it works fine. But if I create a smart group that includes all the contacts in my address book, the smart mailbox won't filter.

Well, I think I figured it out. As soon as my smart group exceeds 500 contacts, the smart mailbox won't filter.

I'd definitely count this as a bug. You should report it to Apple, so that they can fix it.

Problem is, Apple's Mail makes RFC non-compliant headers when sending to groups - unless you want to put every group members email address in the header.

If you include a group name in a To: or CC: header, you should terminate it with :;, like this:

To: undisclosed recipients:;

This is illegal:

To: undisclosed recipients

in 10.3.9, you can work around this by giving your group a name that ends ":;" - without the quotes. In 10.4, Mail thinks that the group name is illegal, and won't send the email.

Some mail servers will reject email with non-compliant headers.
